Southern Queensland's water is among the top final resting places of wrecked ships. Because of this, it is haven for a lot of reef divers. Wrecked ships attract a great deal of fishes in the sea. It is new environment to them, which leads these aquatic species to start off their new habitat in these distinct places under the sea. These are certified fish magnets.
Apart from seeing ship wrecks, reef diving in Southern Queensland means witnessing the grandeur of its underwater kingdom. The Sunshine Coast is filled with extraordinary sights of the aqua world. These include majestic sandstone formations covered with hard and soft corals. You can also explore numerous ledges, caves, pinnacles, and gutters under the sea.
In Southern Queensland, there are four top reef diving sites that are sure to bring a memorable experience to an adventure. These are the Inner Gneerings, Outher Gneerings, Murphy's Reef, and Mudjimba Island. Depending on the diving site, there are numerous sea creatures to behold like the tropical fish, crayfish, sea urchins, anemones, bat fish, mackerel, starfish, sea whips, gorgonians, turtles, stingrays, nudibranches, Spanish dancers, cowries, coral trout, small groper, and bottom dwelling sharks like wobbegongs.
To start with, here are a few tips on reef diving:
1. Do not get into contact with corals and marine life. Corals are sensitive that their natural beauty can easily get damaged.
2. Avoid using gloves and kneepads in coral environments
3. Make sure you are with an expert team if you intend to feed, handle, or photograph marine creatures.
4. Practice proper finning technique and body control
5. Never chase or ride marine animals
6. Maintain normal buoyancy control
7. Take nothing out of the sea except garbage
Most importantly, check first with your local authorities or reliable diving organizations if the group you are hiring for reef diving is a professional and trained team. Check if they have encountered accidents before while reef diving. Safety is always the best tip before going out on any adventure above, or under water.
