What films do you think should not have been nominated and should have been nominated for the oscars?
I ask because this years oscars, were the lowest rated show, not only because of the strike but i have heard people talking about the films.
Here is a list of the 80th Academy Awards:
Atonement/Juno/Michael Clayton/There Will be Blood/No Country for Old Men/In the Valley Of Elah/Eastern Promises/Away from Her/ Sweeney Todd/La Vie en Rose/Elizabeth: the golden age/the savages/assasination of Jesse James/Charlie Wilson's War/Into the wild/I'm not there/ Gone baby Gone/ American Gangster/Diving Bell and Butterfly/Ratatouille/Persepolis/ Surf's Up/August Rush/ Once/ The Golden Compass/ EnchantedPirates 3/ Bourne Ultimatum/ Transformers/3:10 to Yuma/Across the Universe/Kite Runner/Norbit
I was like what about Harry Potter 5, Knocked up, Superbad, SpiderMan 3, 300, Hairspray and Beowulf?
I think the nominations were very appropriate for this year.
No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Atonement, Juno, and Michael Clayton were all excellent films.
The movies you listed - Harry Potter 5, Knocked up, Superbad, SpiderMan 3, 300, Hairspray and Beowulf - are not Academy Award material. They are made to be blockbuster pictures. Thats not to say they are not supposed to be good, they just dont compare to the films that were actually nominated - filmmaking wise.
Oscars are given to films that exemplify great filmmaking in all aspects, and those movies you listed do not do that - no matter how popular they were with audiences or how much money they made. The people who nominate and vote for the awards are experts on filmmaking aspects and are in the best position to pick theappropriate movies. The Academy Awards do not usually reflect the wide majority of audience opinions, but they are still the most prestigous film award possible in the industry.
Harry Potter and Spiderman 3 could have recieved Best Visual Effects noms but thats about it. These sequels were not even as good as previous installments of the series. 300 too, but I didnt care for that movie at all and neither did many critics. Beowulf couldnt gotten a Best Animated Picture nom but the films that were nominated were better so it didnt deserve it.
Knocked Up and Superbad were very funny, but the right kind of comedy to get nominated (and as someone said earlier - comedies rarely get nominated). I thought Knocked Up had a chance at Best original Screenplay, but in actuality Academy voters wouldntvote for these types of movies. Plus there is too much improvization for a Screenplay nom.
Hairspray was nominated for a Golden Globe, but again it wasnt Oscar material.
Now having said all that, I though "Into the Wild," "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," "Zodiac," and "Rescue Dawn" were overlooked a little too much in this years awards noms. And although I liked it very much, "Juno" was nominated in too many categories. it should not have been nominated for Best Picture or Best Director.
** Norbit was nominated for Best Makeup.
AND ANYONE WHO REFERS TO "NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN" AS A HORROR MOVIE, HAS ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT AND DID NOT UNDERSTAND THE FILM, THEREFORE SHOULD NOT TRASH IT. And not everyone couldnt have played that part, Javier Bardem gave an absolutley amazing and well deserved winning performance as the killer, Anton Chigurgh.
Reef diving in Australia especially on the Great Barrier Reef is an experience most divers have dreamed about, but few take the opportunity. The reef itself has long held the reputation of being one of the most popular places on the planet to dive - the rich abundance of underwater animal life and the easy access to many parts of the reef are two reasons why divers head to the area in their thousands every year.
Here are some facts about the Great Barrier Reef that will convince you to go reef diving:
* It is the world's largest coral reef system composed of over 2 900 individual reefs and 900 islands.
* The Reef stretches for 2600 kilometres down the coast of Queensland.
* CNN has included it on their list of the seven natural wonders of the world, and it was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981.
* Most of it is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which helps reduce the impact of fishing and tourism and protect the numerous endangered species that call it home.
* 215 species of bird are attracted to the reef or nest in its islands.
* Salt water crocodiles live in mangrove and saltmarshes on the coast near the reefs northerly reaches.
* More than 1,500 species of fish live on the reef, including the clownfish, red bass, red-throat emperor, and several species of snapper and coral trout.
* Four hundred species of corals, both hard corals and soft corals are found on the reef.
There are a wide range of dive sites along the Great Barrier Reef, there are calm, protected, shallow spots around the islands, perfect for first-timers, there are gentle reef sites, rich in fish life and corals and the deeper sites on the outer reefs for those with some experience. All sites are best reached by boat ranging from luxury cruisers to spectacular sail boats. For those visitors who have never put their head under the water, but want to see if they can enjoy snorkelling or diving, there are excellent one-day, first-time dive trips. Diving from Cairns offers a truly unique reef experience for the traveller who seeks a more personalised and relaxed approach to exploring the Great Barrier Reef by mask, snorkel and fins.
What to see in Southern Queensland are sandstone formations covered with hard and soft corals, numerous ledges, caves, pinnacles and gutters to explore. Depending on the site: tropical fish, crayfish, sea urchins, anemones, bat fish, mackerel, starfish, sea whips, gorgonians, turtles, stingrays, nudibranches, spanish dancers, cowries, coral trout, small groper and bottom dwelling sharks such as wobbegongs.
If you plan to go reef diving in Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is a must-see you cannot let pass.
