The ABC's of Scuba Diving

All year round, scuba diving is a popular activity. It is basically defined as the act of entering the water and remaining below its surface to explore, work, of simply just have fun. There are several famous scuba diving spots all over the world. Scuba diving isn't limited to the oceans, however. Many divers dive into other forms of water, such as lakes, ponds and rivers.

Scuba refers to the tank containing air that divers carry with them to enable them to breathe underwater. The word scuba stands for "self-contained underwater-breathing apparatus.

For centuries, people have been fascinated by the life found underwater.  In fact, there is an estimated six million active divers around the world. Commercial, cave, wreck and military diving are just a few purposes for diving. The most popular of which is sport or recreational diving.

However, before you go diving, there are several issues to be considered. Scuba diving is a potentially hazardous sport. Thus, you need to look at a few of its physiological concepts to help familiarize yourself.

Diving requires special training, especially when you plan to go more than 130 feet below the surface. Due to the water pressure, you would find yourself experiencing decompression sickness and air embolisms.

Also, it would be helpful to know that a person tends to consume more air the deeper he goes underwater. It follows that with the same amount of air, divers at a shallower depth last longer. Also, air consumption varies per person, depending on their diving experience, general relaxation and physical fitness. Also, those who have a healthier lifestyle, which means less alcohol and tobacco intake, expect to last longer underwater.

The dangers in scuba diving stem primarily from its physiological hazards. Unlike aquatic animals that have gills to extract oxygen from the water, humans need external devices to breathe underwater. Thus, it is important to strictly follow the procedures learned during scuba diving certification process. You should never attempt to dive beyond your abilities and experience.

To breathe comfortably underwater, it takes more than good supply of air. You need to consider the pressure exerted by water onto your chest and lungs. That means, you should be able to exert enough pressure when inhaling to counter the surrounding temperature, or else, you might not be able to safely inflate your lungs.

Fortunately, there are modern devices such as valve regulators to ensure that the diver can breathe naturally and almost effortlessly underwater, regardless of depth. You won't be using your nose in inhalation since it is usually encapsulated in a diving mask. However, you don't need to worry since inhaling from the regulator's mouthpiece will come out spontaneously.

It is also important to ascend or descend slowly, to give your body enough time to equalize the pressure. Sudden changes in water pressure can be very harmful. A significant difference from the pressure outside and inside the diver can cause severe injuries, referred to as barotraumas.

Bends or decompression sickness is caused by staying too long in great depths then ascending very quickly. The deeper you dive underwater, the denser the air you breathe, which allows you to breathe nitrogen more than safe amount. Nitrogen forms tiny bubbles on your tissues and bloodstream. If these bubbles stay trapped inside your body, they could burst and cause extreme pain.

Another fatal pressure related injury is air embolism. When you ascend too quickly, the gases in your bloodstream will form a large bubble which can impede the flow of blood to your brain. To allow excess air to escape from the body, a diver should ascend slowly enough.

To avoid these risks, you must be able to calculate how long you can safely stay at a certain depth and how long you should dive again. Of course, there is also the risk of running out of air and breathing contaminated air when underwater. Scuba diving certification courses should teach you how to avoid these and what to do should a fellow diver experience such problems.

So before you explore the underwater world, make sure you have passed a scuba diving certification. This will allow you to do unsupervised dives, refill your air tanks and buy scuba diving gadgets. Of course, when you go scuba diving, make sure that you have somebody with you who can assist you if something goes wrong.

How Scuba Diving and Snorkeling Are Basically Done?

Some of the basic requirements for both scuba diving and snorkeling don't differ much, except that scuba diving is for deep water while snorkeling is done on the surface of the water.

It is necessary to know how to swim to be able to scuba dive and snorkel. To do the BSA swimming test is recommended.

The test starts with jumping feet first into water above your head, leveling off, then swimming strongly for 75 yards. You can do breast stroke, trudgen, side stroke or crawl. Turn and for 25 yards do an easy backstroke. 100 yards must be completed in one swim. Stopping is not allowed. If need to rest, you can have yourself float on the surface of the water.

Proper Use Of Scuba Diving Marine Equipment

Scuba diving is practised for many reasons such as recreation, but it also forms a part of many jobs within the oil and gas exploration sectors. The entire purpose of scuba diving gear is to sustain the diver while he is underwater for a prolonged period of time. Such marine equipment typically involves a canister of compressed atmospheric air (such as Nitrox) and a regulator through which the diver can breathe. The latter serves to convert the ambient tank pressure into atmospheric pressure, thus allowing the individual to reach depths that would otherwise be impossible. Buoyancy compensators can be used when one needs to dive below the accepted recreational standards. Since humans are incapable of breathing underwater, it is essential that scuba diving equipment be used properly in order to avoid potentially deadly occurrences.

Maintain All Marine Equipment:

It's not safe to assume that all equipment needed for a dive is in proper working order without doing a thorough check first. Even if you acquire your gear through a marine equipment rental company, you will need to perform the proper checks yourself.  Of primary importance is any device associated with the free flow of air. This includes the rebreather, diving regulator and pillar valve on the cylinder tank. Pressure gauges and dive computers should be tested to ensure that their readings are accurate. Not only are regular maintenance checks necessary but one must also exercise care when purchasing marine equipment in the first place. While cost is a factor, it is more important that the marine equipment dealer should be reputable and hold themselves to the highest standards of safety. If one is seeking scuba diving gear for recreational purposes, look for a company which is affiliated with industries as they tend to be more stringent.

I recently got a Hollis DG02 wrist dive computer, and when I first got it, it would count/show the elapsed bottom time on the display. However, I must have hit something to put it into another display mode. How do I get it to display the bottom timer again when I dive? Thank you in advance, scuba friends.

When you were first certified your instructor should have told you that an important part of using a dive computer is to read and understand the manual.

My trip to la jolla with scuba diving equipments

Diving in La Jolla, California a few years ago became quite a treat. I had been asked by a friend of mine who always liked to challenge himself and others. See, I like hot tropical weather. La Jolla is not hot tropical weather. This was not going to be a day of snorkel equipment. My new scuba accessories would come in handy.

67, 68 degrees at best that day, the water wasn’t very tropical at all. That was back in the days when I thought diving at 67 degrees was cold and unfit for diving. I guess I’ve changed my mind since then. I kind of had to change my mind.

Steven had been my friend for years. We go back to the days when we took our diving lessons at the YMCA. It was just something we always shared. We loved diving. We’ve been diving since, but our lives have taken us in different directions and we live in two different parts of the world. Him in California. Me in the Southern most tip of Florida.

When he got a hold of me to dive with him in La Jolla, I couldn’t turn him down. Steve didn’t really answer me when I asked him how cold the weather was. He just sort of shrugged off my question, "It's warming up quite a bit."

My SCUBA accessories included my new CompuMask from Aeris, which got Steven going. "Does that thing have a GPS and play songs for you while you’re down there?" His laugh was a full bellow that echoed over the water.

"No, but it will tell me the temperature when I get down there." That shut him up real quick. It won’t. But, what does he know?

The Aeris CompuMask HUD Dive Computer Mask can tell you just about everything else. It has an LCD panel that does not hinder your dive whatsoever, but presents critical information to you that you need. Like, your depth, your elapsed dive time, your cylinder pressure and your remaining dive time. I got a little cold. But, I stayed tough. I hadn’t been in cold water in a long time. I tell you what though, I knew when to go to the surface. Steven was serious when we got back on land. "How did that thing work for you?"

Scuba Dive in Florida - My Story of Got2Dive

This is a Pittsburgh, PA city girl's story about scuba diving, how to scuba dive, where to scuba dive, become a certified scuba diver, and start Got2Dive. The only water I was familiar with was the three rivers. As a young girl my parents had vacationed a few times in Tampa and Clearwater Florida. I fell in love with the sun, sand and surf! I imagined what the ocean would be like and wondered what it would be like to experience in real time. I passionately wanted to scuba dive in Florida.

In the Beginning Scuba Dive in Florida

After graduating high school and cosmetology school I was working at a hair salon in Pittsburgh, PA. I moved out from my childhood home into my first apartment with my two sisters. My sister knew I wasn't happy. I talked and dreamed of moving to Florida to be near the ocean. One cold and wintery day, my sister came home with a one way ticket to Florida. She knew how much I wanted to live in the land of sunshine and hear the sound of the ocean waves. She recommended I take the one way ticket and go after the life I so passionately dreamed and longed for. With a one way ticket in my hand and my entire LP collection, I was on my way to living my dream. I left cold snowy Pittsburgh with my black snow boots on and my mauve winter coat and arrived in Fort Lauderdale. I vividly remember the automatic doors opening and feeling the warmth of the eighty degree sunshine. I remember removing all my winter clothing as I headed out of the terminal doors. I thought dear God I am in heaven! My very first stop off that airplane was Ft. Lauderdale Beach to dip my toes in the ocean! My friend's dad was a certified diver and he talked to me about his diving adventures. I enjoyed listening about his stories of spear fishing, boating and diving. I knew I could do that! I was so intrigued by his stories that I could not hold back my peeked curiosity. This scuba diving experience would help this city girl, overcome fear of the powerful ocean, especially since we all watched the 1975 movie "Jaws". I was determined and motivated to become certified in scuba diving. Scuba diving would provide me the opportunity to see the beauty that lies beneath. On May 1st 1982 my friends and I became NAUI open water certified scuba divers. With only a handful of dives under my weight belt I met my husband who at the time was not a scuba diver; we got married in 1983 and started a family right away. My diving passion was put on the back burner raising a family and earning an income. Over the years I dreamed of scuba diving in the ocean again. Hubby was happy being a snorkeler and over the years he showed no interest becoming a diver and I was fine with that. - <!--nextpage-->

Fast forward to 2009 and after raising 2 wonderful children, we became empty nesters. One day after not being able to hold back my passion to return to the ocean, I approached my husband and said the time is here and I am getting back into the sport of scuba diving! He said "What?! You're actually going diving without me, you need two people do that. You're going without me, but we do everything together…hike, bike, canoe, white water rafting, etc.! I explained to my husband I met a certified scuba diver who I could trust as a dive buddy. Again he said "you need two people to do that…Who Is He"?! I got the biggest chuckle out of that! I never gave him a name. He could not get over I would experience scuba diving without him. Well, stunned and in disbelief, he called our local dive shop and inquired about the certification process. Then he called our kids and said your mother is getting back into scuba diving; do you want to get your certification with me? They said yes and so the class date was set for my family. An interesting thing happened, not only did my family get certified but they invited friends and another family from the neighborhood. As my family studied the course, I brushed up on my scuba diving knowledge as well. The local dive shop Dayo Scuba allowed me to follow the entire wet portion of the dive class. I was able to watch and record my family's certification process through videography and pictures. I loved watching our kids and especially my husband of twenty eight years learn all about the sport of scuba diving! Seeing all of them enjoy learning about open water scuba diving gave me joy! Watching them learn a new skill and gain even more confidence was awesome. What a tremendous family activity this turned out to be. - <!--nextpage-->

In 2009 I received the best Mother's Day gift ever; Scuba diving was an excellent activity and adventure we could continue to do as a family. Remember the diver my husband assumed was a man; well it was actually a female friend who was already a certified diver. And her family was certified the same Mother's Day! We both got to eyewitness and capture the excitement of our families together as they for the first time experienced breathing under water and discovering the beauty below the surface! if you have a point and shoot, many companies make watertight housings for that, and they are pretty cheap compared to the dslr housings. there are even universal bags with a lens port to use that are decent. if you have the money and want to continue this hobby (which can be very rewarding and profitable) look at sea and sea brands. they have great gear and decent prices. good luck.

Scuba Equipment Essentials For Specific Diving Conditions

People that just start out scuba diving are intrigued by the idea of going under the water and seeing many amazing things, however they are not aware of how much you need to know about the equipment that must be utilized. Most beginners learn early on that specialized gear for different types of dives is necessary and must be mastered.

This information is limited, however, to recreational diving as this will apply to most people that begin to learn this sport. People that do not have their own equipment typically will lease what they need while on vacation or holiday.

Of course, it is okay to do this, but before you do, it is important that you understand a little bit about the equipment that you're using. It is actually very dangerous to use diving gear that you have never used before or are not familiar with. As you probably have guessed, the more familiar you are with various types of scuba equipment, the safer you will be when using it.

Many divers use various units of equipment, one of which includes a demand regulator which we will discuss here. First of all, there are one or more cylinders that are filled with air that you wear while scuba diving.

A diving regulator is used with the cylinders receiving the air within them which is stored around 3000 to 4000 PSI. The purpose of the demand regulator is to provide air to the diver at an appropriate pressure level so that they can breathe. Other factors such as the depth or level that the diver is at modify the end result.

Multiple hoses are not used on open circuit configurations instead of one hose. A two-stage regulator design is often used with a single hose regulator so that high-pressure cylinder gas can be taken care of. The demand valve found in the mouthpiece is actually the second stage regulator.

With just a few small adjustments, each person can figure the demand valve to supply the proper amount of air to the diver. High and low pressure devices work together to provide the right levels of air for each of the divers. Whether you are looking at breathing normally through your mouth, or three or diaphragm, each device provides a solution to make life easier.

Well known throughout the scuba diving community is what is called a dive computer. A very important instrument, this actually prevent you from getting the bends or what is commonly called decompression sickness, by allowing you to monitor your speed as you rise toward the surface. The calculations that it performs will give you a safe ascent profile, basically a guideline for rising to the top at a speed that will prevent you from getting sick.

The software actually computes your speed as you ascend, and also warns you as to when you need to do decompression stops along the way. Calculations are even biologically derived by utilizing inert gases in your body to further refine the information you need to reach the surface safely and without harm.

This device has many different mathematical parameters that it uses to calculate a variety of useful results to make your diving experience safe and fun.

Diving is definitely a fun filled event, some of which involves extensive scuba training with equipment. Dry suit diving, and cave diving, have become very popular over the last few decades requiring more special gear to be manufactured.

The military, and the industrial complex have long been interested in these types of scenarios. SCUBA diving will provide you with exciting experiences that will last a lifetime, and you will be able to learn constantly.
