Scuba BCD Buyers Guide - How to choose the right Scuba BCD

Scuba Buoyancy Compensator devices come in a variety of different styles. The most popular style of buoyancy control devices used today by most recreational divers are the jacket style scuba BC, which is worn like an inflatable vest with buckles in the front. This style of scuba BCD, wraps around the front of your body, with the side panels containing the inflatable bladders. The scuba tanks strap onto the back harness and other scuba gear like the regulator hose, octopus and gauges are also secured through additional straps which maybe found on the BCD.

Just decide what features are important for you to fit your style of diving and you are very well on your way to getting that perfect Scuba BCD.
Whatever style of buoyancy compensator device you choose make sure the Scuba BC you are about to buy is a good one. Below are some major features to consider when looking to buy a BCD:

Fit and comfort - When buying your scuba BCD, the first important characteristics to look out for are fit and comfort. An uncomfortable BCD, and one that will not fit to your size, will distract you from your scuba experiences. You will probably have to frequently adjust it during your dive. It will definitely take some of the pleasure out of the dive.

I once had the unfortunate experience of renting a Scuba BC which was too small and it really constrained my movements underwater. At the end I was just glad to have ended the dive. Now that is not what scuba diving is about. So now imagine buying a Scuba BCD which does not seem right. You will probably get put off scuba diving just cause you may be of the opinion that the scuba gear makes you feel restricted and claustrophobic which is really not the case.

The Scuba BC should fit you snugly as streamlined as possible against your body, but not too tight. On the other hand an over sized Scuba BC will uncontrollably rotate around your body therefore giving you an uncomfortable dive as you will undoubtedly focus on adjusting it throughout your dive.
Also check that the buoyancy compensator device has a configuration and harness that makes wearing the Scuba BCD comfortable and keeps it from riding up around your neck when inflated. Check that the quick release straps are well positioned so that you can easily reach them in case of an emergency.

Lift Capacity - It must hold enough air to give you and your equipment enough buoyancy to float you at the surface. You can find out a Scuba BCD's lift capacity by floating an inflated BC and adding weight to it until it sinks. The average lift capacity for a Scuba BC is approximately 40 lbs.

Hoses and valves - It should have a low pressure inflation system to make it possible to slowly fill your Buoyancy Compensator Device with air directly from your tank. A large diameter inflation/deflation hose is also important so air can be easily released. Every Scuba BCD must have an over-pressure release valve to prevent it from rupturing in case it is overinflated. Check that the release valves are easily accessible.

Weight Integration - More expensive Scuba BCDs normally come with integrated weights for those divers that prefer to wear less scuba gear. This type of scuba BC has got weight plates which are normally found at the back side of the BCD. I really like this type of scuba BC configuration, the advantage of this system is that, it is more comfortable as you will not need a weight belt. When it comes to scuba weight distribution, the weight is evenly distributed along your back rather on your hips which can sometimes become uncomfortable during your dive. Other desirable features to look for in your scuba BC are utility pockets, a whistle for surface communication, hose retainers and utility rings for attaching accessory equipment. Again check whether these are positioned within an easily accessible area on your Scuba BC.

Scuba diving can be one of the most enjoyable recreational sports you will ever make. However, before you start getting all excited about scuba, you have to be very well aware that scuba diving does carry its own risks.

Diving related accidents resulting in death or serious injuries are not all that rare. You may hear every now and again of such unfortunate incidents in which a diver looses his life. It makes you want to stop and think.

However, this should not stop you from a giving it a try. With proper care and caution, scuba diving can be a very relaxing sport. There are kids and elderly alike that enjoy this pastime without loosing their lives. Let me put this into context. Scuba diving is no more dangerous than driving a motorcycle. In fact I dare to say that today, it is more dangerous riding a motorcycle in a quiet street. But that does not stop bikers from getting on the road and enjoying their machine.

Firstly let us take a look as to why most scuba diving accidents occur. Well, according to statistics, most scuba diving deaths occur to divers who are not properly trained. Either due to not knowing how to operate their scuba equipment or because of a lack of understanding on the effects of scuba diving in deep water.

The first step you should need to do even before buying your own equipment is to get certified with a reputable certifying agency. Do not opt to get trained by a friend or a relative who is not a a certified scuba instructor. Instructors are highly qualified in specialized training and skill and will provide you with the necessary scuba skills which you will not get through an unqualified person.

Physical health is another important factor. Scuba diving is a very strenuous sport. Scuba fatalities from heart or circulatory problems account for about a quarter of all scuba diving deaths. Although you do not need to be a world class athlete, You should be healthy enough to take on the physical stresses associated to scuba diving. If you are in doubt of your physical capabilities, it would be wise to undertake a physical exam before a dive.

One of the most crucial scuba diving safety rules is - never dive on your own. No matter what level of expertise you have, you should always dive with a buddy. Help given underwater even in the simplest form can make all the different between life or death. Besides it is more enjoyable to have someone to share your diving experience with rather than diving on your own.

Always go down with someone who has far more experience than you. This is especially the case if you are a beginner to scuba diving. Many divers risk their lives by overlooking certain risks. Over-confident divers may stray away from their dive plan to explore an underwater cave. This risk can easily be avoided if the dive plan is maintained. Never stray away from the dive plan.

Remember that you are a guest in the underwater environment which is alien to the world you are normally accustomed to... There are many factors that can lead to dangerous situations. Therefore you have to always be aware of your surroundings and be prepared to react when caught up in a dangerous situation.

A key in scuba diving safety is to continue your diving eduction. A good diver will never stop learning. There are so many things to learn about which will give you the necessary confidence in scuba diving. It is therefore essential that you maintain your scuba skills by diving frequently.

The most important factor when it comes to scuba diving safety is that you take proper care of the equipment which is taking care of you when you are underwater. Service your scuba diving equipment at least annually and maintain your gear in good condition. If you own scuba tanks then it is best to pressure tested them every 5 years.

Investing in Scuba Diving - What Are the Expected Costs to Start Scuba diving?

Scuba diving does not come cheap. In fact it is quite an expensive adventure sport. You have to prepare yourself to invest scuba so before even starting you have to be sure that you are willing to make the commitment. However the experiences that scuba will give you are priceless.

You have to understand that the cost of scuba diving, are segmented into three parts. These are Scuba Diving lessons and scuba diving Certification Costs, scuba diving Equipment and the actual Dives.

To begin with, scuba diving lessons and an accredited scuba diving certification is required before exploring the underwater environment. Expect to pay around 0-0 for the course leading up to the scuba diving certification.

The bulk of your cost of scuba will however be spent on your scuba diving equipment. Be prepared to pay around ,400 to ,000. The main key to this piece of equipment is reliability. Therefore go for the best regulators out there. Don't skimp on this one, the last thing you want when diving is a regulator failing on you. The next piece of equipment which is mandatory in scuba is the buoyancy compensator device commonly known as a BCD. This equipment is essential to regulate your buoyancy whilst underwater. Expect to pay around 0 for a good one.

Float Diving

Does a full tank of air float when diving?

If you don't have the tank on you?

For the most part, the answer is no. The weight of the tank and the weight of the air in the tank will typically make the tank negatively bouyant (ie it will sink).

As you breathe the air out of the tank, it is possible for the tank to go from negatively bouyant to positively bouyant (ie it will float).

Under the columns for salt water bouyancy, it shows if the tank is negative or postive when full, half, or empty.

For example, the S080 is negatively bouyant when full, but it is positvely bouyant when half empty, and really bouyant when empty.

In a decade, technical diving has stopped being the preserve of extremists to generalize, but specialization in the field. The reason technical diving has been reached only after passing a series of challenges and control in the past. At the end of 1980, International Association of Nitrox diving technique has become the leading center for specialized technical training, marking a revolution in diving.

How to choose an agent dive technical training? There are about five international training centers in Hong Kong, including the agent Foundation IANTD and PADI. Several points should be considered when choosing a training center: the availability of facilities and level, emphasis set of fair procedures and good training, experienced instructors of technical diving, and the opinions of alumni. mass = density * volume

mass = 1.2Kg * 100ft^3 = 1.2Kg * 2.83m^3 = 3.396Kg

The pressure is distributed uniformly throughout the container; no adjacent spaces experience any different force exerted on their "walls". Assume that you have a pump which is powerful enough to put air into the tank to the critical pressure of 228bar.

Use the ideal gas formula:
PV = N*R*T, P is pressure in atms, V is in liters, N is in moles, R is 8.3, T is temperature 293K.
We have all the information except N the number of moles of air, solve for N

100ft^3 = 2830Liters

N = 228 * 2830 / ( 8.3 * 293 ) = 335 moles

1 molecule of oxygen is 16amus, and each amu is 1.66 * 10^(-27) Kg

Each molecule is:
16 * 1.66*10^(-27) Kg

Each mole has
6 * 10^23 molecules
which means
6 * 10^23 * 16 * 1.66*10^(-27) Kg

335 moles in all, so multiply by the number of Kg for each mole:
Total # of Pressurized Kg:
massPressurized= 335 * 6 * 10^23 * 16 * 1.66*10^(-27) Kg = 5.34 Kg

The total # of Kg is the pressurized Kg plus the mass which was already in the tank(not pressing against the walls).

Total Quantity of Oxygen:
massTotal = 3.396Kg + 5.34Kg = 8.736Kg
