I plan to use them for just having fun in the pool. I've never used 1 w / nose before purging. It's a whole lot of water going to come anyway and make them useless?

Diver Mask

How deep can a scuba diver be certified for with tanks of compressed air and a scuba mask?

This is a duplicate question so I'll just bring my answer from the other one, over here.
The recognized limit is 130 feet for an advanced level recreational diver on air. This is not necessarily the limit that a technical diver may restrict himself to. It's not uncommon for a experienced tech diver that dives within their ability, to go to 150 to 170 feet on normal air. I've known a few that have dived 240 feet on a regular basis. They also happen to be experienced and have the proper training and equipment and observe decompression obligations.
That number of 130 feet is just that. A number that the certifying agencies have come up with for the average diver with average equipment and training, that in most cases will be safe for the diver.
The reverse can be true as well. There are some divers who can't get to 90 feet without being seriously nitrogen impaired.

scuba mask problems... is my mask going to hold up?

I'm taking the scuba certification course at my college, and we are going to the beach to do our check-out dives next weekend. i just noticed that the lenses have tiny cracks along the edges, near the frame. 1- does anyone know what may have cause these cracks and 2- when i dive in deeper water, will my mask hold up to the pressure? the cracks look like stress fractures. i take good care of all my equipment and the mask is not a cheap walmart mask, it is an oceanic, ion 4 series. i didn't think that a (supposedly) high quality mask would do this after only being used in a 10ft deep swimming pool.

Cracks in a new mask ought to have been noticed by yourself fairly quickly. You are diving now and your gear is always paramount.
Personally, I'd take it back to the shop you bought it from. You DID buy it from a dive shop and not online, right? Online and you may not have any recourse. Now that the chicks are out of the nest, I'm feeding a new side effect - fearlessness. Okay not exactly daring, but I find I am more attracted by the crazy antics that I used to be. Perhaps this effect is common in empty nest - or at least with the baby boomers. Were we not driving VW bus, change the world, stickin 'to man, try to build something? Over there must be some hidden latent reader outside under my ex-mother heli - Dammit - It's Getting my attention. So I stuffed my not-so-perky Butt in a wet suit, strapped 16 pounds of weight around my waist (I am apparently very buoyant) and jumped in. and immediately freaked out.

There I was in the ocean treading water as a foolish, embarrassed and humiliated. What happened? I ACED the pre-ocean part of the lesson. In the pool I was amazing - a machine Diving underwater if ever there was one. I was almost one of those shark hunters Discovery Channel. My mind frantically tried to understand where things have gone terribly wrong ...

On the boat, I was excited. I even integrated in inspiration. A couple of 70 years freaking taking a 100 foot dive with three generations of their family. My new hero - perhaps I could be one of their children for day. I was intimidated.

We dropped anchor and seventies led down (with their REAL children - The Brats heartless), leaving behind us beginners. The strapping on the gear began. Before long I stood there with an air tank on my back (the air is WAY heavier than you might think), a weight belt and a jacket with very restrictive fifty bazillion tubes hanging from it. Overwhelmed, the meaning of the tubes started to leak. Leads to the boat in palms with a little peripheral vision because of the mask I wore, I began to unravel. It was not cool.

I turned on my mantra of panic (we do this every day and do not die, people do it every day and do not die ...) and jumped in. Needless to say, after making it down to about five feet huge, I gave distress signal (the only thing I remember the pool) and was again hoisted on the ship as a whale defeated. Not my finest moment.

The captain kindly boat and I became a friendship as we sat alone for 45 minutes while everyone was having the time of their life. I was angry, jealous and determined. Fortunately, it was a hard two tanks. I had another chance and I was not going to blow it.

The elderly couple (who I now hated with every fiber of my being) rose from the sea, like Jacques Cousteau and started talking (with my husband, no less) about all the fabulous creatures they saw. Now I was really angry jealous and determined. Apparently, it's state of mind I needed to be in.

I jumped again and I went down along the safety rope. My instructor, Shelly very patient, stayed right in my face. I was petrified, but I was determined (we do this every day and do not die ...) terror would not win this time. Reaching the end, I stood at the bottom of the rope as it was my job. At this juncture, I realized that my main fear was that I collapsed when I would normally float. Being a control freak, it was not sitting well with me at all. My brain told me that if I let go of the rope I go down slowly until I was stuck forever on the ocean floor. I forgot I had fins, strong legs and a competent instructor. I let go.

Shelly took my hand and lead me to a hiding Sting Ray in the sand. Kneeling next to this strange and beautiful creature, my Darth Vader breathing sound transcended a calming yoga type hum. The department, in deciding that he wanted nothing to do with us, got up and "flies" away. I gave chase. I had not even realized that my fear was gone. I was one with the ocean.

Next step - the certification. And, just maybe, I'll have my own Discovery Channel Shark hunting show - all I have to do is punch the average family in their nose, right?

How can I clean a diving mask?

I have a diving mask that I use only occasionally. It has been sitting in a closet for the last several months and has a film and lens and the rest of the mask just looks dirty. Can you tell me which product is going to clean this without damaging it?

I use toothpaste to clean all of my mask. It worked for a mask that was sitting on the bottom of a lake for years. It was completely seaweed gunk everywhere and after a good cleaning and rinsing is fine to use. One of my friends use it since the mask is broken. Good luck with your cleaning.

What is the best way to De-Fog a scuba Mask?

I have tried two different kinds of De-Fog for my mask but it still fogs up. I also tried "Scrubbing" the mask using the de-fog with a toothbrush and leaving it in but it still fogs. Any Suggestions?

As already suggested, try using spit. The important things to remember are to treat the inside of the mask when it's still dry and to let it dry before using the mask. This can take a short while, but it's worth the wait.

Which is best on a swimming/scuba mask; a rubber or vinyl seal/skirt?

I'm looking to buy a scuba mask for my upcoming holiday, I've found one that's pretty good but I have the choice of a rubber or vinyl seal/skirt.

Are you sure that one of those options isn't silicone? That's usually what a good mask's skirt is made of. Rubber and vinyl both break down under sun exposure fairly quickly as compared to silicone. Rubber or vinyl also eventually crack in that process. Silicone just discolours.
If those two choices were the only two available, I'd opt for the rubber ( I've never heard of vinyl being used) since it would be more flexible and offer a better fit.

Scuba wet suits were not taken seriously until World War II and the advent of Navy Frogmen (seals) which became one of the most effective weapons United States of war. With the French invention of the Aqua-Lung, Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) was used in war and was then translated into research teams to explore many mysteries of the ocean. As soon as this started, the urgent need to dress it became painfully obvious divers suffering from hypothermia after only a few jumps. The divers tried everything from greased long johns to survival suits remains of Air Force, and the Bradner wet suit.
