STEP 2: The Open Water / Scuba Diver is the first level of diver certification, your ticket an exciting adventure in the underwater world. This course includes knowledge development (classroom), skill practice in confined water (pool) Diving and reality in the water (ocean), all under the supervision of an instructor certified in scuba. Open Water / SCUBA Diver course consists of 5 modules of instruction (or home study e-Learning), 5 confined water modules and 5 water (ocean) modules.

For your convenience, the theoretical part of the Open Water / Scuba Diver may be completed one of three ways. You may learn at any time using the Open Water / Scuba Diver DVD and a manual or interactive CD-ROM in the comfort of your own home, then meet with your instructor to review your progress.

Some certification bodies offer a second option called e-Learning. And yet, you can start whenever you want with the click of a mouse. e-learning students do not attend class sessions and do their training on the Internet wherever they are.

Option 3rd is to complete all class modules and DVD in a classroom with your instructor and other divers.

STEP 3: During or after your university, you get to spend time in the pool while learning the art of breathing underwater. This is the "practice" in part your training program scuba. The academic and practical applications are met while you learn how to manage your diving equipment above and below the waterline. The buddy system, skills in the water, communications and the joy of being weightless in the liquid medium come into play while in the pool.

Step 4: If you thought you had a blast in the pool, then you will love being in the ocean. You are now ready to take all the Open Water part of the program.

You and your instructor will tour the coral reefs, ridges and falling ocean you quickly review and build on the skills you learned in your class and work together. Do I need to purchase my own equipment to go snorkeling?

I'm going on a charter snorkel excursion near Molikini.(Maui) Should I buy my mask,snorkel and fins before I go?

When u go on an excursion the equipment is included in the price, if ur not sure call or e-mail them. All the charter boats supply their own. The best is the Trilogy to Lanai. Do not rent from hotels they'll rip you off, go to Snorkel Bob's in Napili (between Kaanapali & Kapalua), they might have one in lahaina also.Honolua Bay North of Kapalua & Ritz Carlton is a fish reserve along w/ the adjacent bay called Slaughterhouse. You can rent ur own & drive, but I reccommend u hop on a tour sailboat, they'll supply lunch, equipment, take u right to the fish, & a beautiful guided tour that's worth every dime! Aloha, have fun! Wailea & Kihei have many great spots also, just ask any lifeguard so the currents don't take you to Tahiti. We have some extremely strong currents in Maui, I'M NOT KIDDING! I have pulled many tourists in when they got caught in a current & i recognized they were headed out from the Island. We have a current called the Molokai Express. You figure out why. Always speak to the lifeguard. I wouldn't even trust all of the locals, some of them may trick you.

Define the type of diving you plan on doing and purchase appropriate gear both in cost and function.
1/ Mask- the rule is that it fit you. If it doesn't, then spending 150 bucks on a top end ocean master or even an Optrix is money down the toilet. Check the fit in store by holding it against your face and no strap. In hale once, through your nose, slightly. If it stays on for 30 seconds or more, it's an ok fit. Falls off? Move on to the next mask. When you're done this test with all the masks, take the ones that passed and check your field of view. The mask that offers good downward vis, decent side and is low volume is the winner. Don't buy a mask just because it has a purge valve. Just a bell and whistle and may be a source of a leak later.
2/ BC- Plan on tech diving later? You'll want lift and something that will go doubles. OMS or Dive Rite here. Cruise the reef, just about any BC made by a major manufacturer is fine so long as it fits and has the functionality you need. Gonna wreck dive eventually? You'll want pockets and D rings out your nose and something streamlined that's back inflation. Weight integrated would be a bonus but you'll pay for it.
3/ Regs- If you don't ever plan on diving a cold location, then don't spend the money on environmentals. All major brands of reg manufacturer's have decent gear and they are always trying to out do one another. Don't skimp on this part of your budget. Buy the best you can afford for the type of diving you plan on doing.Check up with www.scubadiving.com's reviews on the newest and their test results. Spend the money on a custom mouthpiece. It's worth it. Myself, I dive both Apeks and old Sherwoods. I have had a freeze with the Apeks but not with my trusty old Woodies. If there's a possibility I might get a freeze, then I dive the 'woods, if not, then the Apeks for the breathing ease.
4/ snorkel- Something that clears easily and also can be stowed in a pocket. There are a number that can fold. Personal preference here.
5/Tank- Alum 80 is the standard. No point in going steel unless you're thinking of going tech.
6/ Gauges- Think streamlined. Other than that and whether you wish to have an integrated computer on the console, all are more or less the same. Some mounts offer a canted view for your compass, some don't.
7/ Fins- Try out as many as you can before buying. Everyone's kick style is different and not all fins do well in every situation. For example, I can't stand split fins. My kick style won't work with them and I silt out wrecks with the damn things. I also dive in heavy current most of the time. I do better with Blades and oddly enough, I don't tire with them like I do with splits. Some of my pals are the opposite.
8/ Wet suit- Here's the fit thing again. Everyone's body is different. So is their tolerance of cold. If you can find one ( US Diver's makes one) get a semi dry. They're warmer but a little harder to get on or off because of the wrist , neck and ankle cuffs. Mind you, if you're diving 70F or warmer you won't be needing that. Get info on the temps in the area that you plan on diving most and what others are wearing. Manufacturers again, doesn't matter. All the major brands like Bare or Henderson, for example are good. Buy for the area you plan on diving. If You're a great lakes diver, then something with reinforced knees and elbows is a good idea. Zebra mussels will shred anything not reinforced. Same goes for gloves. Hood? Will you need one? Some suits have an integrated hood that you can choose to wear or not. Most don't so you'll need to purchase one if diving cold. Booties? Just like buying shoes, try them on and go for a walk about. Make sure there are no pinch points when you slip on your fins. It sux having great fitting , good rock climbing booties feel like they are driving a nail into you little toe when you get your fins on.

Abaco, which is located in the northeastern Bahamas, has several favorite places to discover the world beneath the waves. The sites vary in depth, sea life, accessibility, and difficulty opening the world of snorkeling at all.

Just off the mainland is the coral Mermaid. This small reef is excellent for beginners, and can be reached by land or water. Under the water, several large balloon shaped coral home to numerous species of colorful fish. Parrot fish are the most interesting, because their beaks are reminiscent of the teeth. Those who listen carefully will be able to hear the crunch of the parrot fish munching on the reef.

When the waters are calm on the Atlantic side of Fowl Cay, the underwater world is spectacular. Protected by the Bahamas National Trust, the marine life is abundant Fowl Cay. It is not uncommon to see fish of all sizes, stripes stingrays and even sharks! It is a popular spot for day trips to many that are offered by local centers diving.

For a more relaxing trip to the reef behind Elbow Cay is an ideal place for snorkeling. The reef, which rises above water at low tide, is within walking distance of the beach. Although there is shallower than the others, it is inhabited by several species of fish coral and small. A similar reef is located behind Great Guana Cay. These sites are great for those who love the beach as the day can be spent enjoying the sun and refresh yourself while exploring the underwater world.

Similar to Fowl Cay, the site of Sandy Cay can also be annoying with its current, and large rollers moving toward the reef. The reef is located behind a small cay, and is technically located in the Sea of Abaco, although one side is open to the Atlantic Ocean. Elkhorn coral is popular on this site, as the number of creatures large. Eagle rays, barracudas, sharks are often seen cruising the area. Smaller fish tend to swim at ease under the snorkellers, following their every move.

These are just some of many sites to visit in the waters of Abaco. These places are ideal for diving, although Fowl Cay and Sandy Cay are equally important for diving. For those wishing to see these underwater paradise on their own, it is important to give great attention to the weather. The waters are often strong currents, and can often be dangerous - even the most experienced swimmer. It is also imperative to attach a mooring place, and avoid using an anchor. Anchors can cause fatal damage to reefs, which destroying the homes of sea creatures much. Another option is to join a local dive company on one of their scheduled tours. Excursions vary in length and are a great way to discover the local secrets.

Mask Snorkel Fin

Depends what kind of diving you are doing and where you will be diving. I would never buy a black silicone mask unless I was into underwater photography. Having the silicone rubber all black will cut out lots of light from the water and reduce your visibility, which is perfect if you are a serious photographer but a disadvantage if you're not. Plus other divers will snigger at you as they look like gimp masks.

The fins look quite short, if you have powerful legs and a strong fin kick these will be fine, if you don't, longer fins will give you more propulsion through the water - not too long though or they'll make your legs ache.

The snorkel doesn't look like it has a purge valve, which is a one way valve at the bottom of the J which you can blow excess water out of, these are much easier to use than normal J shape snorkels.

As for the boots....... If you are diving from the shore where you will have to walk over rocks etc. they would be just the job. They look better for walking in than diving, if they are not flexible they will seriously hurt your ankles while you are finning. Iif you're diving from a boat or shore diving on sandy and gravelly surfaces the boots at the bottom of the page with the mask snorkel and fins will be perfect.

The gear looks good but it's expensive and you can get better for your money. You are better off visiting a dive shop where you can try the gear on before buying. Mares are one of the best makes of fins on the market. Clear silicon masks will give you more visibility and it's essential you try before you buy to find the best fit for your face shape. To test the mask fold the strap in front of it, put the mask up to your face ensuring your hair isn't trapped under it then breathe in through your nose, a good mask fit will stick to your face in this position only coming off when you breathe out. Check the bit below your nose doesn't sit low on your lip or it will leak when you hold the regulator in your mouth as it will break the seal.

How long can you stay underwater while free diving ?

How long can you stay underwater with using your mask snorkel and fins without coming to the surface for air ? I can hold my breath up to 5 minutes.

Only a minute or so but your five minutes you may want to re time. The current record for doing what you're doing using mask and fins by a woman is actually measured in distance, not time. It's called dynamic apnea with fins. Natalia Molchanova swam 214M on 2008-10-05. Think about that. That's kicking along to swim two laps of an olympic pool. Think how long that takes on the surface.
Your 5 minutes are probably what is known as static apnea. Different ball game. You're sitting still for it or nearly so. The current women's record is 8 minutes flat, also held by Natalia Molchanova.

There's a lot of different ways to measure someone's stay underwater on a lungful of air. The general term for the sport is free diving.

Still, 5 minutes is pretty good for someone not trained in it, even if it is a static apnea time.

Where to dive in Mozambique? ?

I am working in Botswana for 6 months and want to do some diving (I am PADI Advanced Open Water). I only have snorkel/mask and dive comp with me and dont know anyone else down here that dives so will require a place that can offer full kit hire and sort me out a buddy?

There are many diving classes being offered in New York. If you are considering taking one, you may want to know first several requirements. Before going to class diving diving, Make sure you have the following:

Interesting - while classes can be completed in a few days, training and obtain certification require some homework. Most diving schools in New York require their students to complete their tasks, including reading materials, videos and reviews. If you interest not only could give up and waste time and money.
