How strong a swimmer you need to be scuba diving?

I always wanted to learn to dive diving, but I'm not a very good swimmer. I can swim, but I do not feel really comfortable in the water. I do not go to the pool or beach, but I really think I would go diving. I'd like to see what lies beneath the surface. To me, it would be like any other world. Has anyone had the same experience of diving? You do not hesitate to swim or dive? Any advice?

Regarding swimming and scuba diving, the key comes down to comfort in the water. I answered this before, so here is a copy-paste a previous response: I had students who were learning to swim at a time when they were in my class underwater. First, you must be comfortable in water. Most problems I encounter while diving courses are linked to people being uncomfortable in the water. If you can not swim, but are comfortable in water, so I can teach you diving underwater (see the following article for the exception to this comment). Secondly, there is a swimming assessment (either swimming or Pitch / FIN / snorkel swimming) and water from the tread, which are both required to complete the course. Finally, there is no "traditional" swimming motion (such as freestyle and breaststroke) in scuba diving. You are propelled by fins using a variety of kicks. That said, you will be doing activities in / on water, so a certain level proficienty bathing is necessary for security reasons.

Resting atop a submarine mountain of coral, the island of Grand Cayman offers some underwater 'truly unique for diving. Off side walls of coral that descends steeply into the Caribbean create some incredibly unique and challenging dives. Elsewhere around the island, there are many dive perfect for all ages and skill levels. No matter where you dive in Grand Cayman, however, you are sure to meet a variety incomparable life underwater. It also helps that the warm waters off the coast often boast visibility exceeding 100 feet - a fact sure to impress Snorkeling and diving underwater. With more than 250 dive sites unique in all, Grand Cayman is as one of the destinations most varied diving in the Caribbean.

Several sites of the most popular dive on Grand Cayman are located off the west coast in a area known as the west wall. Many dive sites in this region are located just a short boat ride from the resorts lining Seven Mile Beach. At sites such as Japanese and Oriental Gardens Gardens, divers are promised an up-close look at the colorful coral and sea creatures in the calm water perfect for photography. A little further the coast, these "gardens" sink into a maze of tunnels, arches and underwater canyons.

Adventurous divers want to visit the east coast Grand Cayman. Although there are only a few dive operators offering tours of this area, you have little chance of finding reefs coral everywhere. In the first slope of the reef, you will find a series of tunnels, underwater caves and arches. Sites in this area, such as Grouper Grotto and Babylon are still teeming with fish, sponges and sea turtles.

Finally, what would a trip to scuba diving in the Caribbean, without being a few wreck dives? Balboa, a 375-foot freighter that sank during a storm in 1932, lies at a depth of 30 modest walk to Georgetown Harbor. Today the ship is home to an assortment of the most photogenic people in the Caribbean. The most popular dive wreck in Grand Cayman is Oro Verde, a coral-covered cargo resting in 60 feet of water off the shores of Seven Mile Beach. In addition, Grand Cayman recently sank five ships in different places at once to the delight of divers and ongoing research of environmental scientists.

Scuba Divers are made of many people who are tired of the tedious work day usually followed by the frustrating task of driving; add all the noise pollution it causes. It is above the divers encounter everything else in these hectic times outside of scuba diving.

Some divers go even further by finding a career in scuba diving. Some become diving instructors themselves. They find their career scuba diving rejuvenating compared with many other choices.

Diving does not start normally there though. It begins generally where many other diving began, with the free stream. Then they move on the courses and learn much more and realize they love all that diving has to offer. They are scuba diving in a completely new, and I want really share with others too. Often this leads them to work towards a career in teaching scuba diving.

This is simple and not all courses will then work with your new career in scuba diving. You must be a master at it. This of course means a lot time diving in a variety of situations and an instructor or more. You should know how to dive and survive well. With this as a diving instructor Underwater, you'll be able to bring others up to scuba diving. You need to know what they need to dive safely. Quite worthy career!

Many are turning to the diving instructor assuming they already know everything about diving underwater. As the potential to inspire them can be great or potentially heartbreaking, you really do not need to know something they need to know, and more! When you do not, you must admit that as well! If your trip is to constantly learn more when diving in many situations, you should seriously consider a career in scuba diving as an instructor.

Although also consider that you must deal with people, and follow timelines. You must be able to teach your students in a short time, how to stay safe and alive when scuba diving. Do I need a flag to spearfish or hunt lobster in SoCal if I'm snorkeling?

I know I need a liscence and i know that i would need a flag if I were using SCUBA gear, but under any circumstances would I need a flag in Southern California.

Regardless of whether it is being used for snorkelling or scuba trips, any support boat for in-water activities should be flying the 'divers down' flag (red with diagonal white stripe, or the international 'A-flag'--or both) until all passengers have reboarded. Other boats are legally required to motor well clear of diveboats flying this flag (at least 30-50 yards/metres, under most jurisdictions), and may only approach at idle speed/dead slow/<5 knots, to minimise the risk of accidental collision with swimmers.

Divers themselves do not necessarily have to tow a marker float (with or without 'flag')--but would be well-advised to do so anywhere there is other boating traffic, if feasible, since it increases their visibility to other boats (and also their own boat cover), and thus their safety. The same would apply to a snorkeller, especially if they were planning to freedive for spearfishing/collection purposes. Snorkellers/freedivers would also be well-advised to follow the 'buddy system', with one on the surface while the other dives.

Boats should not be left unmanned in open water, even if anchored--and the person(s) left aboard should be capable of operating the boat/radio unassisted (and must certified/licensed to do so if the boat is being used for commercial activities). Thus, for a dive trip, this means that there should be at least 3 people aboard (1 crew, 2 divers), and preferably 4 (i.e. 2 crew) for commercial operation.

Why does everytime i take pictures of myself diving underwater with my regulator mouthpiece ?

Everytime i go scuba diving i usually take pictures and sometimes my friend she takes pictures of me underwater with my regulator mouthpiece and i post them on flickr. I always get these comments like " wow you suck dick really good " " jeez suckin dat juicy dick huh ? ". Why do i get these comments on my pictures ?? Should i remove the pictures ?

Scuba Dive Mask
scuba mask problems... is my mask going to hold up?

I'm taking the scuba certification course at my college, and we are going to the beach to do our check-out dives next weekend. i just noticed that the lenses have tiny cracks along the edges, near the frame. 1- does anyone know what may have cause these cracks and 2- when i dive in deeper water, will my mask hold up to the pressure? the cracks look like stress fractures. i take good care of all my equipment and the mask is not a cheap walmart mask, it is an oceanic, ion 4 series. i didn't think that a (supposedly) high quality mask would do this after only being used in a 10ft deep swimming pool.

Cracks in a new mask ought to have been noticed by yourself fairly quickly. You are diving now and your gear is always paramount.
Personally, I'd take it back to the shop you bought it from. You DID buy it from a dive shop and not online, right? Online and you may not have any recourse. This is one of the reasons buying some dive gear online can bite you in the arse and why I can't stand the practice. If you did the sensible thing and bought from a shop, ask if what you're seeing is normal for that mask. It may not be cracks, it may be something else. I can't see it, so I can't advise otherwise.

Now that the chicks are out of the nest, I'm feeding a new side effect - fearlessness. Okay not exactly daring, but I find I am more attracted by the crazy antics that I used to be. Perhaps this effect is common in empty nest - or at least with the baby boomers. Were we not driving VW bus, change the world, stickin 'to man, try to build something? Over there must be some hidden latent reader outside under my ex-mother heli - Dammit - It's Getting my attention. So I stuffed my not-so-perky Butt in a wet suit, strapped 16 pounds of weight around my waist (I am apparently very buoyant) and jumped in. and immediately freaked out.

There I was in the ocean treading water as a foolish, embarrassed and humiliated. What happened? I ACED the pre-ocean part of the lesson. In the pool I was amazing - a machine Diving underwater if ever there was one. I was almost one of those shark hunters Discovery Channel. My mind frantically tried to understand where things have gone terribly wrong ...

On the boat, I was excited. I even integrated in inspiration. A couple of 70 years freaking taking a 100 foot dive with three generations of their family. My new hero - perhaps I could be one of their children for day. I was intimidated.

We dropped anchor and seventies led down (with their REAL children - The Brats heartless), leaving behind us beginners. The strapping on the gear began. Before long I stood there with an air tank on my back (the air is WAY heavier than you might think), a weight belt and a jacket with very restrictive fifty bazillion tubes hanging from it. Overwhelmed, the meaning of the tubes started to leak. Leads to the boat in palms with a little peripheral vision because of the mask I wore, I began to unravel. It was not cool.

I turned on my mantra of panic (we do this every day and do not die, people do it every day and do not die ...) and jumped in. Needless to say, after making it down to about five feet huge, I gave distress signal (the only thing I remember the pool) and was again hoisted on the ship as a whale defeated. Not my finest moment.

The captain kindly boat and I became a friendship as we sat alone for 45 minutes while everyone was having the time of their life. I was angry, jealous and determined. Fortunately, it was a hard two tanks. I had another chance and I was not going to blow it.

The elderly couple (who I now hated with every fiber of my being) rose from the sea, like Jacques Cousteau and started talking (with my husband, no less) about all the fabulous creatures they saw. Now I was really angry jealous and determined. Apparently, it's state of mind I needed to be in.

I jumped again and I went down along the safety rope. My instructor, Shelly very patient, stayed right in my face. I was petrified, but I was determined (we do this every day and do not die ...) terror would not win this time. Reaching the end, I stood at the bottom of the rope as it was my job. At this juncture, I realized that my main fear was that I collapsed when I would normally float. Being a control freak, it was not sitting well with me at all. My brain told me that if I let go of the rope I go down slowly until I was stuck forever on the ocean floor. I forgot I had fins, strong legs and a competent instructor. I let go.

Shelly took my hand and lead me to a hiding Sting Ray in the sand. Kneeling next to this strange and beautiful creature, my Darth Vader breathing sound transcended a calming yoga type hum. The department, in deciding that he wanted nothing to do with us, got up and "flies" away. I gave chase. I had not even realized that my fear was gone. I was one with the ocean.

Next step - the certification. And, just maybe, I'll have my own Discovery Channel Shark hunting show - all I have to do is punch the average family in their nose, right?

Tip Scuba

Any tips on passing Scuba Diving Certification Test?

I've taken the Scuba Diving written test twice and can't pass. Any tips to help. I am terrible in math.

Math shouldn't be an issue if you made it past grade 6. As for tables, I believe they let you use an ERDP now on the exam ( I'm not in favor of that, but I don't make the rules).
Most of the questions on the exam are common sense or included in your manual, so there should be no issue there either. If you read the manual, did the quizzes, you should pass the exam. If it's the tables that are bogging you down, they actually require little math at all. If there's math, it's a multiple dive day and you're simply using addition. Most of it is just taking known information to discover unknown information. If you're unsure of the steps involved, that's what you paid your Instructor for...ask him/her.
