What is a good diving computer?

I am in the market for a new diving computer. I am a recreational diver with an Advanced Open Water PADI certificate. I am in the market for an entry left diving computer that can read Nitrox levels, has decent features, easy to read display and simple to use underwater.

I have a Suunto Gekko, which does everything you asked for. It will even download your dives to a PC, with a very slight programming modification.

Diving Dive Equipment
What equipment do you need for night diving?

I have a project for a resort management class in school and I've decided that I want to bring night diving into a resort that I've made up. But, I don't scuba dive so I don't know what equipment is needed. Specific names of the equipment would be very helpful because I need to find the cost for them. It would be great if you could help me out! Thanks!

I am going to guess that your resort is located on the water and in a somewhat tropical environment. There are vast possibilities for this kind of location.

The basics you will have to have are(per person) Mask, snorkel, fins, wet suits (allow for choice of short or full body), Tank, buoyancy compensator (BC), Dive regulator with reserve regulator, computer/ gauges, gloves, weight belt, knife, dive booties, Main light, back up light, glow sticks.

You will need at least 2 master divers to do this. Offer it from the shore line, instead of from a boat. I would also go all out and for safety use a Electronic Rescue and Locating System http://www.diverrescue.com/ you loose one person and the resort could fold.

Think about underwater man made and placed items to dive on. A sunken ship, man made reef, art, ect. Have seasonal night dives. Example Halloween place spooky Items around underwater, Christmas would be Christmas themes. There is ans are low power (12 volt dc) that will work underwater. A scavenger hunt.

There are so many possibilities, hove fun and good luck. I love this kind of projects in class.

scuba diving question?

im looking into getting my scuba license and i want to know whats the best brands for bcd's, regulators, tanks, and gauges. also i would like to know if SSI in instruction is better then PADI. thanks

At the basic levels, you learn the same skills for any of the scuba agencies.

As far as what's best, you'll get a ton of "xxx brand" is the best, because I use it!

The best gear is what your comfortable in. Wetsuits need to fit snugly, but not too tight as to restrict movement.

BC's are, again, what your comfortable in. I prefer back-inflate, where my wife prefers jacket style BC's. Also, for BC's, you need to consider your future in diving. If you plan on technical diving, save yourself the cash, and go with a backplate / wing combo now.

The best regulators and gauges are anything you can have serviced locally. If you can't get a reg its yearly service, it's wotrhless. It's not fun having to ship your regs out to somewhere.

Tanks, if you plan on staying a recreational diver, aluminum is fine. Steel tanks you can double up if you plan on technical diving in the future.

Does a full tank of air float when diving?

If you don't have the tank on you?

For the most part, the answer is no. The weight of the tank and the weight of the air in the tank will typically make the tank negatively bouyant (ie it will sink).

As you breathe the air out of the tank, it is possible for the tank to go from negatively bouyant to positively bouyant (ie it will float).

Diving is a unique and beautiful experience that everyone should try at least once in their life. Except perhaps hydrophobics, almost anyone can find the experience of being underwater and floating along both exhilarating and relaxing at the same time. However, without adequate training and preparation, diving can also be a dangerous task, with risks that may affect the preparation. With the proper equipment and precautions, however, is safe and wonderful. Here are some safety tips for diving starting to consider before taking up diving seriously.

How deep can a scuba diver be certified for with tanks of compressed air and a scuba mask?

This is a duplicate question so I'll just bring my answer from the other one, over here.
The recognized limit is 130 feet for an advanced level recreational diver on air. This is not necessarily the limit that a technical diver may restrict himself to. It's not uncommon for a experienced tech diver that dives within their ability, to go to 150 to 170 feet on normal air. I've known a few that have dived 240 feet on a regular basis. They also happen to be experienced and have the proper training and equipment and observe decompression obligations.
That number of 130 feet is just that. A number that the certifying agencies have come up with for the average diver with average equipment and training, that in most cases will be safe for the diver.
The reverse can be true as well. There are some divers who can't get to 90 feet without being seriously nitrogen impaired.

How much money does beginner's scuba diving gear usually cost?

I am not looking for "top of the line" stuff. I am just looking for gear that is will work for a beginner.

New or used?
You'll save 50% on used but you ought to ensure everything fits correctly and has been professionally serviced before purchase.
New kit will set you back at least a 1500 bucks, bare minimum:
1/ BC: Anywhere from 300-600 bucks for an entry level. 1200 bucks gets you into the big league.
2/ Mask: 80- 150 bucks. Make sure it fits.
3/ Fins: 90-250 bucks. Add 50 bucks for booties if the fins are open heel.
4/ Snorkel: 40 bucks
5/ Lead weight: About 30-50 bucks depending on how much you need and it's type. More if your BC has proprietary pockets.
6/Exposure protection appropriate to the area you'll dive: This varies considerably from a 3mm shortie all the way up to a compressed neoprene dry suit. 120 bucks to over 3 grand. Yours will be somewhere in between.
7/ A tank: 200 bucks. Two are preferable. This isn't a "mandatory item", but if you dive regularly it's a "convenient item". I disagree with the previous poster on this item though. If you dive semi regularly...most DO own at least one tank. Also, he's incorrect about airlines and tanks. None will take them on board so there is no "100 dollar charge". You could conceivably have one shipped after it's passed security and has had the valve removed but then you're looking at paying for two vizzes (30 bucks each) before the tank is fill able again. In the case of air travel, everyone leaves tanks and weights at home.
8/ The biggie....a reg set: 400 bucks to 1500. It's all going to depend on what you'll be doing with them. No point in buying a reg set that isn't compatible with Nitrox. You may want to go there later. If the set you purchase isn't nitrox compatible...you're spending more money later and going through the hassle of selling off your previous set. Same if you plan on cold water dives. You'll want environmentally sealed ones. All that costs a little extra at first but saves you money later if you buy smart.
9/ A light. 70-1500 bucks
10/ A dive knife or shears. 60 bucks and up.
11/ A dive computer. Very handy. 300 bucks and up. Saw one for 24grand but it was gold plated. That's a bit of a luxury.

Ideally you should be looking for gear that will last you, fits well and fit into where you plan to dive and how far into the sport you intend on going. Planning ahead will definitely save you some serious cash. No need to buy things twice because your original won't hack what you plan to do next. I guess the bottom line is that you get what you pay for and you pay to play. Don't skimp on this stuff. I disagree somewhat about rental gear that someone posted. Some of it like tanks or lead...sure.The rest of it needs to fit you. It's potentially unsafe if it doesn't. That rental reg set may have been dragged through the dirt just prior to you getting it as well. I've seen a pal rent a BC only to have the infator dump come right off the bladder. He lost their lead on that too since he couldn't inflate the BC and had to ditch. Guess who had to pay for the rental lead? He managed to avoid paying for the BC because it was obviously shoddy maintenance but then again..he should have caught that before he left the shop. Don't trust all rental gear is a good mantra.
