Dip ‘N Dive offers new great scuba diving packages at affordable prices

One area of scuba diving education that seems to get little attention is how to pack your gear. My very first scuba diving vacation was when my wife and I got married in Hawaii and did our honeymoon in Tahiti. I toted a full sized, scuba suitcase from Chicago to Maui to Honolulu to Papeete to Bora Bora to Moorea, then back to Honolulu and finally Chicago. Each leg of the journey, I had to pay extra for the weight (and extra bag) of scuba gear. I carried way too much unneeded stuff. In today's economy, the airlines are looking for any reason to bend you over and nail you in the keester with luggage fees. So planning how you pack, can save you some money in the future.<!--more-->

The Thinking Dive Traveler

Before you start putting anything in a bag, you first have to go over everything and look for items that can be removed. I'm currently packing for a trip to Turks and Caicos. As I was folding up my mesh bag for carrying gear on a boat, I noticed that I still had a bunch of teaching slates in one of the pockets. I removed the backup light from my harness as well as the backup double ender I keep and stainless steel buckle used to hold my canister light in place. Even though I could really use my stainless steel backplate, I'm taking my aluminum plate to reduce the weight of the bag (I'll add a weight belt when I get there). By making these small changes, I was able to shave off 8 pounds from the bag. That may not seem like much, but it will help me get below the "heavy" bag weight limit the airlines impose. Remember, every ounce counts. So get into the mindset to eliminate even the smallest item if it isn't needed. If your bag is even 1 pound over the weight limit, you can bet a paycheck the airline will charge you extra. There's a war raging for your dollar. You need to fight to keep it. Make sure you know the weight limits for the airline you are traveling with prior to packing up your dive gear.

The Rental Option

Even if you own your own gear, you can still opt to rent gear from the dive operator you are diving with. This way you won't have to worry about packing, and maybe losing your dive gear. I'm always skeptical about renting gear in other countries. Who knows how well it has been taken care of. I get the willies just thinking about donning a wet suit that a thousand people may have puked on, peed in or done something worse. So I prefer to take my own gear. Certainly renting gear at your destination is a viable option. Just do your homework into how they service their gear.

Maximizing Bag Space

Looking at how you pack your gear can be a big benefit to you. You are only given a finite space to place your gear in a bag. My shorty wetsuit and mesh gear bag will lay perfectly flat on the bottom of my travel case (when it's laying down). I then put my backplate and wing on top of that. Make sure all of the air is out of your BCD prior to packing. My regulator bag sits nicely inside the harness next to the backplate. I have fin "pockets" on the inside of my travel case. Even my Jet fins will fit in them. My wet suit boots go in the foot pocket of my fins. The lid of my travel case has a padded zipper pocket on the inside of it. My mask fits in there nicely. I carry my bottom timer/depth gauge on my carry-on bag. By packing this way, I have plenty of room for souvenirs to bring home. Just as long as they don't push me over the bag weight limit. In the past, I made mistakes by packing things I thought I needed. For example, I own two regulator bags. One is a very nice, thickly padded XS Scuba one. I love that reg bag. But it is too bulky to travel with. So I have a less bulky one, that isn't as nice, to carry my regulators in. I've also stopped carrying multiple Pelican cases. In the past, I took as many as three Pelican cases to hold "stuff". I'm now down to only one small case, to hold my wallet and sunglasses when I'm in the water.

Make Sound Travel Decisions

If you take frequent scuba vacations, make sure that you think through your gear choices when traveling. It doesn't hurt to have a travel BCD that is smaller and lighter than your home BCD. Same thing with fins. As much as I love my Scubapro Jet fins, my old Dacor Panthers save me 4 extra pounds and I can move through warm water just as efficiently as my Jets. I also have warm water boots that are low cut and a thin rubber sole. Whereas my home wet suit boots are high tops with a thick, hard sole.

Otherwise, if you don't mind paying the extra fees for exceeding your checked bag weight limit, then feel free to keep stimulating the economy. We could use all the help we can get.

I'm thinking of buying some free diving fins (the kind with the very long and flexible blades) for my wife, but we're concerned that they may not work well when using a breaststroke. I'd like to make sure before I drop $ 100+ on a pair.

I'm a competitive swimmer, and I personally would not buy the long fins if using them for breaststroke. When I swim, my coaches have never let us use fins while kicking breaststroke because it causes stress to your knees, and they don't particularly help while swimming breaststroke. There are specific fins that CAN be used when training breaststroke, but they can run expensive. These fins also shouldn't be used for kicking any other stroke. Hope this helps!

Get a new one and see how that works out. If it's still foggy, then make sure the mask has a firmer grip on your face. That usually helps me when it gets foggy.

Scuba Diving Computers Required

More and more dive operators are making them mandatory. Some even include a wrist dive computer as part of the gear provided to their customers. This is especially true for live-aboard dive boat operations.

Of course that only makes sense for these "dive your brains out" deals. You're doing a ton of diving, spending serious time underwater, and a computer not only makes it easier, but helps avoid compromising safety.

And don't misunderstand, live-aboards are great. It doesn't get much better than five or so dives a day, and merely rolling out of bed to get to the site. Put that together with great food, pristine reefs off the beaten path, & falling asleep under the stars, and it's a super vacation recipe.

Aside from their obvious usefulness in the live-aboard world, dive computers make sense for most all diving situations. In fact, anyone serious about the sport shouldn't make another dive without one. From maximizing bottom time to calculating complex dive plans without compromising safety, these wrist computers are invaluable.

Even the dive operators who don't make them mandatory, will separate the computer divers from the non-computer divers, requiring those without personal dive computers to follow a much more conservative profile, which most often results in a shorter dive.

Now there's nothing wrong with being conservative, but not to the extent of cutting a dive needlessly short. And that's the whole point behind using a computer. It allows more time at depth and/or underwater while still helping you stay within safe limits.

There may be a handful of very experienced scuba divers who are so skilled with the dive tables, they can recalculate complex dive plans on the fly during their dive with some proficiency. But even they can't beat a computer in terms of speed and accuracy. And most, if not all those guys, still use a computer simply because they prefer to get the most from their diving.

Whether you need the full functionality of variable gas mixtures, extensive dive logging, complicated multi-level dive profiles, deep or decompression dives, etc., or just want to stay safe while allowing for slight changes to your dive plan, a good dive computer is an excellent investment.

Oceanic Veo 100 Air Dive Computer – Scuba Dive Gear

Scuba diving, while fun, has its share of dangers like any other outdoor sport. Know how to recognize and treat potential problems before (or when) they occur can make the difference between life and death when you're underwater. Here are some safety measures to take, and some things that can happen that you seek.

DCS occurs because the nitrogen from the air supply to a person unlike oxygen, is not fully utilized and absorbed by the body, and increased levels of nitrogen, unless controlled by a device on the breathing apparatus called a regulator, collects air pockets in the body. These create a feeling of cramps, nausea and dizziness and physical sensation referred by divers as The Bends. DCS usually occurs on a downhill too fast, like the body and the regulator can not fast enough to offset the increased water pressure.

Victims of Decompression: Cage - Cerebral arterial gas embolism occurs more often following a rapid uncontrolled ascent, versus the divers windings affected due to a rapid descent. This is manifested by acute pain in the body, especially in the sinuses, head and in the lung. This is a very serious condition that can be potentially fatal. Cage is caused when the rapid rise of the plunger causes air bubbles similar to those formed during DCS, but this time the pressure changes air bubbles that trigger the body are due to a sudden decrease in water pressure around the body. This causes the air trapped to have a higher volume pressure than the surrounding atmosphere. Indeed, the diver is an unopened can of soda, which has shaken real underwater, and once it leaves the water, the same effect as opening the can ...

Injuries - Injuries that can occur from decompression range from simple discomfort such as nausea, sharp pains and cramps, to more serious matters. Also keep your first aid kit well stocked on your dives, and still have a way to call with others, including a radio transmitter, cellular phone, and even signal flares. Although seemingly cumbersome and useless, these elements can make the difference between life and death.

What is a good diving computer?

I am in the market for a new diving computer. I am a recreational diver with an Advanced Open Water PADI certificate. I am in the market for an entry left diving computer that can read Nitrox levels, has decent features, easy to read display and simple to use underwater.

I have a Suunto Gekko, which does everything you asked for. It will even download your dives to a PC, with a very slight programming modification.

A Scuba diving computer can be a divers best friend. You will be allowed to stay longer if out of the dive tables. There are many types and / or styles of computers Diving can be chosen. What is the best is really personal preference and adapts to the form of diving. The following are some of the choices you have when purchasing your dive gear.

Console Dive Computer

A dive computer console is connected to other computers through a hose. Console dive computers typically come with a pressure gauge. The readings are typically larger than in a dive computer wrist so that also it may be easier on the eyes.

There are also options for a scuba diving equipment to be mounted on your hose (this is the guy who currently use) or clamp on the CB. Choose whichever is most comfortable for you and fits within your price range.

Wrist Dive Computer

The dive computer wrist is very popular. These types of large clocks and computers appear to be worn on the wrist. They will tell you everything you need to know at a glance. Some teams wrist diving are also capable of being mounted on a console.

Sometimes the face can be a bit small for all the information that the computer can display, so that make sure you will be able to read under water.

Unless they are air integrated and wireless (see below) dive computers wrist usually does not come with a pressure gauge. A small disadvantage is that these can be quite easy to misplace or lose.

Air integrated dive computer

Air integrated dive computers are increasingly common. An integrated computer measures the air pressure tank and then calculates how longer fits the current rate of air consumpetion. The integrated air dive computer tells you how much time can pass at any level of effort.

A team integrated air replaces the need for a submersible pressure gauge (SPG). One disadvantage of an integrated air team is that if it fails, you lose information on the amount of air is left in your tank. Dive more.

Nitrox Dive Computer

With Nitrox diving increasingly common, so are the teams that nitrox compatible. Even if you are not diving with Nitrox now, if you are thinking, even diving with Nitrox in the future, is probably worth buying a dive computer with Nitrox. This will save the expense of buying a new computer in the future. However, if I do not think ever diving with Nitrox, then there is no reason to pay by this feature. A standard air computer is probably less than your $ 100 + nitrox counterpart.

Hoseless dive computer

Diving hoseless team consists of the receiver (typically worn on the wrist or mounted on the AC) and a transmitor. How deep can a scuba diver be certified for with tanks of compressed air and a scuba mask?

This is a duplicate question so I'll just bring my answer from the other one, over here.
The recognized limit is 130 feet for an advanced level recreational diver on air. This is not necessarily the limit that a technical diver may restrict himself to. It's not uncommon for a experienced tech diver that dives within their ability, to go to 150 to 170 feet on normal air. I've known a few that have dived 240 feet on a regular basis. They also happen to be experienced and have the proper training and equipment and observe decompression obligations.
That number of 130 feet is just that. A number that the certifying agencies have come up with for the average diver with average equipment and training, that in most cases will be safe for the diver.
The reverse can be true as well. There are some divers who can't get to 90 feet without being seriously nitrogen impaired.

How much money does beginner's scuba diving gear usually cost?

I am not looking for "top of the line" stuff. I am just looking for gear that is will work for a beginner.

New or used?
You'll save 50% on used but you ought to ensure everything fits correctly and has been professionally serviced before purchase.
New kit will set you back at least a 1500 bucks, bare minimum:
1/ BC: Anywhere from 300-600 bucks for an entry level. 1200 bucks gets you into the big league.
2/ Mask: 80- 150 bucks. Make sure it fits.
3/ Fins: 90-250 bucks. Add 50 bucks for booties if the fins are open heel.
4/ Snorkel: 40 bucks
5/ Lead weight: About 30-50 bucks depending on how much you need and it's type. More if your BC has proprietary pockets.
6/Exposure protection appropriate to the area you'll dive: This varies considerably from a 3mm shortie all the way up to a compressed neoprene dry suit. 120 bucks to over 3 grand. Yours will be somewhere in between.
7/ A tank: 200 bucks. Two are preferable. This isn't a "mandatory item", but if you dive regularly it's a "convenient item". I disagree with the previous poster on this item though. If you dive semi regularly...most DO own at least one tank. Also, he's incorrect about airlines and tanks. None will take them on board so there is no "100 dollar charge". You could conceivably have one shipped after it's passed security and has had the valve removed but then you're looking at paying for two vizzes (30 bucks each) before the tank is fill able again. In the case of air travel, everyone leaves tanks and weights at home.
8/ The biggie....a reg set: 400 bucks to 1500. It's all going to depend on what you'll be doing with them. No point in buying a reg set that isn't compatible with Nitrox. You may want to go there later. If the set you purchase isn't nitrox compatible...you're spending more money later and going through the hassle of selling off your previous set. Same if you plan on cold water dives. You'll want environmentally sealed ones. All that costs a little extra at first but saves you money later if you buy smart.
9/ A light. 70-1500 bucks
10/ A dive knife or shears. 60 bucks and up.
11/ A dive computer. Very handy. 300 bucks and up. Saw one for 24grand but it was gold plated. That's a bit of a luxury.

Ideally you should be looking for gear that will last you, fits well and fit into where you plan to dive and how far into the sport you intend on going. Planning ahead will definitely save you some serious cash. No need to buy things twice because your original won't hack what you plan to do next. I guess the bottom line is that you get what you pay for and you pay to play. Don't skimp on this stuff. I disagree somewhat about rental gear that someone posted. Some of it like tanks or lead...sure.The rest of it needs to fit you. It's potentially unsafe if it doesn't. That rental reg set may have been dragged through the dirt just prior to you getting it as well. I've seen a pal rent a BC only to have the infator dump come right off the bladder. He lost their lead on that too since he couldn't inflate the BC and had to ditch. Guess who had to pay for the rental lead? He managed to avoid paying for the BC because it was obviously shoddy maintenance but then again..he should have caught that before he left the shop. Don't trust all rental gear is a good mantra.

What's the best resort that has decent quality Golf & SCUBA diving?

I know this is asking a lot but I would prefer that the resort be in or near the Carribean, Virgin Islands, (E.) Mexico, etc. I would prefer an all-inclusive resort (extra $ for golf & SCUBA is ok but it should be at or near the resort). I am looking for a large group vacation (20-40 people), 1/2 are avid golfers and 1/2 are divers, so both activities should be average quality or better. THANKS

A computer diving can be a divers best friend. You will be allowed to stay longer if the dive tables. There are several types and / or styles of dive computers, you can choose. What is the best that really personal preference and adapts to the form of diving. The following are some of the choices you have when purchasing your dive gear.

Console dive computer

A dive computer console is connected to other computers through a pipe. The console dive computers are usually delivered with a pressure gauge. Readings are generally larger than a wrist dive computer so it can also be easier on the eyes.
