Scuba diving, while fun, has its share of dangers like any other outdoor sport. Know how to recognize and treat potential problems before (or when) they occur can make the difference between life and death when you're underwater. Cage is caused when the rapid rise of the plunger causes air bubbles similar to those formed during DCS, but this time the pressure changes air bubbles that trigger the body are due to a sudden decrease in water pressure around the body. This causes the air trapped to have a higher volume pressure than the surrounding atmosphere. Diving Dive Mask
When I dive I get water in my ears. What works better ear plugs (w/holes for diving) or mask w/ear protection?

I am looking for the best solution to ear protection (water entering the ear) when I scuba dive.
I am told that ear plugs with holes (made for diving) allow you to equalize. Which I have no problem doing. However, I am tring to find out what works better protecting the ears. The plugs (made for diving) or the mask with ear protection. Perhaps someone tried them both for an honest answer. Thank you.

How do divers hook up a low pressure inflator hose for inflating safety floats?

If I buy a closed safety sausage, how is the inflator hose set up? And is it just a stand-alone hose that you have to tuck away?

There are inflaters that you can hook up to an extra whip but most divers will simply use the second stage reg. It only takes a second or so and reduces the BS of more task loading.
Closed? As in a balloon? Who would make one, let alone use one as a sausage? I wouldn't. I'd call that a diver lift bag with a bunch of trouble following it. Beam me up in a hurry Scotty if something goes south. No thanks.

It is now almost impossible to find a shop or machine shop car today that did not air compressor running air tools and accessories. If a shop has an air compressor, it will air hoses running around to run the tools air grease guns, inflate tires and perform various other tasks. To keep your shop safe and clutter free, an air hose reel is the easiest and the most widely used to store and use the air hoses. Aqua Lung

Is the Aqua Lung regulators a good choice or is there a better one for the money?

I am looking into scuba diving and am leaning towards the aqua lung legend regulator. It is expensive compared to others. Not knowing too much about all the various brands, I am finding it hard to know which one is a good one for the money.

The reg you by really depends on the type of diving you are or will be doing.
Will you be going into Nitrox diving?
Cold Water?
Tropical ?
Do you have problems with jaw fatigue?
Will you be travelling alot and have weight issues?

By all means spend as much as you can reasonably afford on a "really good " regulator, it is you life support system, but in this day and age one brand seldom stands ahead of the pack for long and many are designed with specific types of diving and divers in mind.
I personally have a Dacor set-up which is light that I use in warm water and in the Caribbean, and a Mares Abyss set-up that I use in the winter and diving in the North Atlantic.

Water sports?

My boyfriend wants us to take up water sports. He says it's a great turn on. However I am very nervous in the water as I got a fright when I was young. What should I do.
It was canoeing he had in mind. I don't know anything about that other stuff some of you are mentioning

Best tip I can offer is learn to swim first!!! In the pool and in the sea. A good first water sport is kayaking. If you are not confident straight away with going out on a river or in the sea, learn in a swimming pool, then have a go in the great outdoors!! Tis brilliant. Then try other sports like bodyboarding, surfing etc and see how they go. Just have great fun and don't worry too much, nothing really can go wrong if you think about it!!

For a time, Americans tried their own version of water polo used a rubber ball and a big pool. This game became known as softball water polo. However, due to a high incidence of violent behavior and rough play, this variation was abandoned. Water polo men became an Olympic event in 1900 and women's water polo was added in 2000.

These are just some water sports. There are many others that are just as exciting as rafting, skiing, underwater hockey, diving, etc.

Diving Gear

How much money does beginner's scuba diving gear usually cost?

I am not looking for "top of the line" stuff. I am just looking for gear that is will work for a beginner.

New or used?
You'll save 50% on used but you ought to ensure everything fits correctly and has been professionally serviced before purchase.
New kit will set you back at least a 1500 bucks, bare minimum:
1/ BC: Anywhere from 300-600 bucks for an entry level. 1200 bucks gets you into the big league.
2/ Mask: 80- 150 bucks. Make sure it fits.
3/ Fins: 90-250 bucks. Add 50 bucks for booties if the fins are open heel.
4/ Snorkel: 40 bucks
5/ Lead weight: About 30-50 bucks depending on how much you need and it's type. More if your BC has proprietary pockets.
6/Exposure protection appropriate to the area you'll dive: This varies considerably from a 3mm shortie all the way up to a compressed neoprene dry suit. 120 bucks to over 3 grand. Yours will be somewhere in between.
7/ A tank: 200 bucks. Two are preferable. This isn't a "mandatory item", but if you dive regularly it's a "convenient item". I disagree with the previous poster on this item though. If you dive semi regularly...most DO own at least one tank. Also, he's incorrect about airlines and tanks. None will take them on board so there is no "100 dollar charge". You could conceivably have one shipped after it's passed security and has had the valve removed but then you're looking at paying for two vizzes (30 bucks each) before the tank is fill able again. In the case of air travel, everyone leaves tanks and weights at home.
8/ The biggie....a reg set: 400 bucks to 1500. It's all going to depend on what you'll be doing with them. No point in buying a reg set that isn't compatible with Nitrox. You may want to go there later. If the set you purchase isn't nitrox compatible...you're spending more money later and going through the hassle of selling off your previous set. Same if you plan on cold water dives. You'll want environmentally sealed ones. All that costs a little extra at first but saves you money later if you buy smart.
9/ A light. 70-1500 bucks
10/ A dive knife or shears. 60 bucks and up.
11/ A dive computer. Very handy. 300 bucks and up. Saw one for 24grand but it was gold plated. That's a bit of a luxury.

Ideally you should be looking for gear that will last you, fits well and fit into where you plan to dive and how far into the sport you intend on going. Planning ahead will definitely save you some serious cash. No need to buy things twice because your original won't hack what you plan to do next. I guess the bottom line is that you get what you pay for and you pay to play. Don't skimp on this stuff. I disagree somewhat about rental gear that someone posted. Some of it like tanks or lead...sure.The rest of it needs to fit you. It's potentially unsafe if it doesn't. That rental reg set may have been dragged through the dirt just prior to you getting it as well. I've seen a pal rent a BC only to have the infator dump come right off the bladder. He lost their lead on that too since he couldn't inflate the BC and had to ditch. Guess who had to pay for the rental lead? He managed to avoid paying for the BC because it was obviously shoddy maintenance but then again..he should have caught that before he left the shop. Don't trust all rental gear is a good mantra.

Dive Light
Two birds made a nest on my front porch light and dive at me when I'm in the yard. What can I do?

Blue Jays like to make nests in my trees and then attack anyone who goes out in the yard. Some may disagree, but I don't feel that I should be afraid to go out into my own yard for fear of being attacked by Blue Jays. I had to take my dog out with me for "bait" and I grabbed a big shovel. If they dive at you, use the shovel on them, but knock that nest down. My brothers have all been "jumped' by Blue Jays and let me tell you, it took forever for the bleeding to stop. It's not worth the lives of baby birds to me. I would get rid of the nest ASAP.

Im going to take a class at my university to be certified as a diver. I have a couple of questions. What kind of part-time jobs are available in the state of New York (something like cleaning algae or something). How much you pay on average an hour? What is art?
