Snorkeling Scuba Dive
Do you carry a snorkel when you scuba dive?
I stopped carrying mine and prefer it that way... I guess if I had a long swim on the surface to or from the dive I'd take one, but I find it to be pointless 99% of the time. What do you think?
You're taught to wear one or at least bring a folding one along but I agree they can be a pain in some circumstances. I for one never bring one along any more, not even my folding one. I've better use for the pocket. I find a snorkel can be a hazard in some situations, like the confines of a passageway with hanging electrical wiring. The less you have protruding off of you, the less chance you have of getting something caught, potentially ripping off a mask in this case. Most of my dives are wrecks...a snorkel just doesn't mix well diving them and are one bit of extra gear that's not absolutely required. My second reel and third spare light go into that former snorkel pocket.
None of my pals wear one on recreational dives, other than for teaching a class, because they're supposed to be following the PADI example for their students. You're not alone.
