scuba mask problems... is my mask going to hold up?
I'm taking the scuba certification course at my college, and we are going to the beach to do our check-out dives next weekend. i just noticed that the lenses have tiny cracks along the edges, near the frame. 1- does anyone know what may have cause these cracks and 2- when i dive in deeper water, will my mask hold up to the pressure? the cracks look like stress fractures. i take good care of all my equipment and the mask is not a cheap walmart mask, it is an oceanic, ion 4 series. i didn't think that a (supposedly) high quality mask would do this after only being used in a 10ft deep swimming pool.
Cracks in a new mask ought to have been noticed by yourself fairly quickly. You are diving now and your gear is always paramount.
Personally, I'd take it back to the shop you bought it from. You DID buy it from a dive shop and not online, right? Online and you may not have any recourse. This is one of the reasons buying some dive gear online can bite you in the arse and why I can't stand the practice. If you did the sensible thing and bought from a shop, ask if what you're seeing is normal for that mask. It may not be cracks, it may be something else. I can't see it, so I can't advise otherwise.
One thing I can say is that it won't matter the depth...but you knew that since you took the course. Think about it and you'll get it.If you don't, ask your Instructor to go over equalization again, then you will

Now that the chicks are out of the nest, I'm feeding a new side effect - fearlessness. Okay not exactly daring, but I find I am more attracted by the crazy antics that I used to be. Perhaps this effect is common in empty nest - or at least with the baby boomers. Were we not driving VW bus, change the world, stickin 'to man, try to build something? Over there must be some hidden latent reader outside under my ex-mother heli - Dammit - It's Getting my attention. So I stuffed my not-so-perky Butt in a wet suit, strapped 16 pounds of weight around my waist (I am apparently very buoyant) and jumped in. and immediately freaked out.
There I was in the ocean treading water as a foolish, embarrassed and humiliated. What happened? I ACED the pre-ocean part of the lesson. In the pool I was amazing - a machine Diving underwater if ever there was one. I was almost one of those shark hunters Discovery Channel. My mind frantically tried to understand where things have gone terribly wrong ...
On the boat, I was excited. I even integrated in inspiration. A couple of 70 years freaking taking a 100 foot dive with three generations of their family. My new hero - perhaps I could be one of their children for day. I was intimidated.
We dropped anchor and seventies led down (with their REAL children - The Brats heartless), leaving behind us beginners. The strapping on the gear began. Before long I stood there with an air tank on my back (the air is WAY heavier than you might think), a weight belt and a jacket with very restrictive fifty bazillion tubes hanging from it. Overwhelmed, the meaning of the tubes started to leak. Leads to the boat in palms with a little peripheral vision because of the mask I wore, I began to unravel. It was not cool.
I turned on my mantra of panic (we do this every day and do not die, people do it every day and do not die ...) and jumped in. Needless to say, after making it down to about five feet huge, I gave distress signal (the only thing I remember the pool) and was again hoisted on the ship as a whale defeated. Not my finest moment.
The captain kindly boat and I became a friendship as we sat alone for 45 minutes while everyone was having the time of their life. I was angry, jealous and determined. Fortunately, it was a hard two tanks. I had another chance and I was not going to blow it.
The elderly couple (who I now hated with every fiber of my being) rose from the sea, like Jacques Cousteau and started talking (with my husband, no less) about all the fabulous creatures they saw. Now I was really angry jealous and determined. Apparently, it's state of mind I needed to be in.
I jumped again and I went down along the safety rope. My instructor, Shelly very patient, stayed right in my face. I was petrified, but I was determined (we do this every day and do not die ...) terror would not win this time. Reaching the end, I stood at the bottom of the rope as it was my job. At this juncture, I realized that my main fear was that I collapsed when I would normally float. Being a control freak, it was not sitting well with me at all. My brain told me that if I let go of the rope I go down slowly until I was stuck forever on the ocean floor. I forgot I had fins, strong legs and a competent instructor. I let go.
Shelly took my hand and lead me to a hiding Sting Ray in the sand. Kneeling next to this strange and beautiful creature, my Darth Vader breathing sound transcended a calming yoga type hum. The department, in deciding that he wanted nothing to do with us, got up and "flies" away. I gave chase. I had not even realized that my fear was gone. I was one with the ocean.
Next step - the certification. And, just maybe, I'll have my own Discovery Channel Shark hunting show - all I have to do is punch the average family in their nose, right?
