How long do electronic consoles last if never used?
People online sell things like PS2, X BOX, PSP, and laptops that are a few years old. But still sealed in box and never used.
Basically, does the functionality of the electronics wear down over time even if never been used? If so, how long before its functionality starts wearing out?
use trough wear on electronics is caused by using it if you look at a processor for instance, those heat up causing magnetism in their core witch put an end of life of about 7 years continues use.
Other parts however, like capacitors can dry out just by standing in a box and not be used at all.Dust is an issue because it 'could' cause shorts if it accumulates to long without the machine being turned on. But if its still packed in the original box that's not a concern.
Market driven design usually designs a flaw in the machine that causes a malfunction/problem after you use it a sufficiently long time (markings on controllers get faded, switches in controllers fail, lasers from disc readers) but the electronics don't really have a set life to it.
So long answer to say: sitting on a shelf rarely hurts electronics. You could need to replace some batteries for their internal clocks but the rest could work after indefinite time.
