Why do some police officers have a flag patch?
Around my area I noticed that some law enforcement officers have a flag patch on their shoulders, while some don't. What is the purpose of these flag patches? Thanks in advance.
In the United States uniform patches vary per police department. Some police departments have U.S. Flags stitched on and some uniforms don't have any. Some Departments authorize Flag pins and again some do not.
No matter what. Each police department has a uniform committee that authorize what can be worn and what can't be worn on the uniform. For example, you can not wear any political statements like a "Vote Democratic" campaign button. Or you can't wear any item that would advertise a product. Again this all decided by each police department's uniform committee and Chief.
Should an officer violate this department rule, the officer is not breaking the law but would be disciplined within the police department with a write-up or time off without pay.
