Why is my sandwich bread moist on the bottom, dry on top?
I have this pack of unopened, 1 week old sliced storebought sandwich bread that I left sitting on top of the fridge. I looked at it today and the bottom half is moist and soft, while the top half is dry and hard. The top of the fridge is dry, so there was no water entry. Could the humidity inside my room have caused the moisture of the bread to run down to it's base? Can I still eat the bread?
You're very right there. It is from the humidity in the room and the dry bread on a high level of the fridge attracts the moist in the air. The top of the bread isn't damp because the top is more exposed to the dryer air which lurks mostly around the ceiling and higher areas. Overall, DON'T EAT IT. You shouldn't really eat any bread that has been sitting there for more than 4-5 days. If you want your bread to last longer, try the old trick of putting it the freezer and then defrosting when you want to eat it! Hope it helps!
