Divers Aqua
Is the Aqua-Lung that divers use for long periods underwater the same thing astronauts use in space?
I'm just wondering because the Aqua-Lung recycles the air that divers exhale when there underwater, so is this the same thing as a Co2 scrubber?
You're thinking of a rebreather, the closed system that recycles exhaled air. Some divers use it, but most use the aqua-lung, and open system which simply vents exhaled air into the surrounding water. So the answer would have to be no regarding the aqua-lung. The rebreather scrubber system and space suit scrubber systems are similar, though.

In diving holiday to Australia in January 1998, two Americans, Tom and Eileen Lonergan, joined a group in Port Douglas, near Cairns, a day of diving on the Great Barrier Coral, 40 miles offshore. At night, when it returned, unnoticed by either the crew or any of his fellow divers, the Lonergans were not aboard.
They spent two days when the hotel manager where they were staying noticed his absence and the alarm. At the time the search was finally launched, was almost certain that the Lonergans were dead.
No one knows what happened to them, if they eventually drowned or were eaten by sharks. Either way, its end is too horrible to imagine. A few months later, one diver waterproof notebook was found in a mangrove swamp. In the faded writing still legible was a horrible message. "For anyone who can help us ... we have left ... please rescue us before he died."
All adventure sports carry risks, and diving is no exception. When complications arise in diving, which can quickly become life threatening with an alarming rate. Most of these are due to human error but can be avoided if precautions are taken before hand. Practice and experience help, but the key to security is in preparation. Here are ten tips to remember.
1. Training and Practice
Learning to dive is a bit like learning to drive. There arc of a competent driver, having become the proof you need to broaden their experience before winning the actual competition. You can start by joining the British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC), which has branches throughout the UK and in several overseas locations. The courses BSAC, diving skills are taught progressively so that each new experience is based on the stepper.
2. Select Qualified Operator
When diving on holiday, you have to depend on your operator. If you will trust your life on your computer and experience, then it makes sense to spend some time in the selection of the best. Divers must ensure that the operator is affiliated with one of the major international diving associations, such as BSAC, PADI or CMAS (World Underwater Federation). If possible, talk to the operator and to know the depth of local knowledge.
3. Carry conduct a refresher course
Take a refresher course before you go. Most accidents happen with the divers to go diving holidays without sufficient preparation and mentally, physically, the team-wise or experience-wise. PADI recommends that all divers to complete a refresher course if you have not dived for six months or more. "
4. Be true to your registry Diving
Keep diving record. Before diving holiday, check your registration. Following a refresher course if you are unsure of informing the operator and the time it is since you last dived. Some dive operators logbooks looking to establish their experience.
5. Team
Use the right equipment, because to implement what they have learned in theory, is crucial and more difficult than it seems. There have been cases in a single piece of equipment like a dive knife can make a difference between life and death. Avoid cheap equipment.
6. Buddy System
Divers rely for their security in their dive buddies. Therefore, the "buddy system" always diving in pairs is taught by all agencies, including BSAC and PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors).
7. Make friends with people on board
Similar incidents have not occurred to Lonergan by first time. People have forgotten at sea. If you are a diver on vacation and nobody knows you travel, make an agreement with another party member to look out for each other. The tour operator to do this, but the organization of his own back-up plan is a sensible precaution.
8. Remember your lessons
Most of accidents are caused by human error when divers panic and forget what they taught. The most serious violations are just diving, lack of control of buoyancy, decompression errors and inexperience with the equipment.
9. Intermittent Pleasure Diving
Accidents occur more frequently those who dive only occasionally. A diver with the right paperwork is technically qualified, however much it since your last dive. But it takes time to reacclimatise and techniques used to become second nature require relearning. Practice makes perfect man.
10. Are you physically fit?
Before you go diving, ask yourself if you are in good shape? The small cases such as a cold can be dangerous. The pressure and infection the eardrum can interfere with the mechanisms of the inner ear sensitive to life.
All divers must accept responsibility for themselves. And never means diving when there is some doubt as to his proficiency or competence of the operator.
