Located 200 nautical miles east of Bali, Komodo National Park is nestled between the major islands of Sumbawa and Flores, all of which are part of Indonesia Lesser Sunda Islands (Nusa Tenggara on current maps).

Komodo Island and National Park Reserve offers almost every conceivable type of tropical diving - From calm and colorful shallow reefs alive with hundreds of colorful reef fishes and crammed with invertebrates, the news swept by the sea deep sea mounts, walls and pinnacles patrolled by sharks, tuna and other large fish.
The variety of marine life for scuba diving in Komodo rivals the world's best destinations for diving. This is the epicenter of world marine diversity and you see lots of things here on a cruise diving you just will not see anywhere else in the world - from whale sharks, sunfish, manta rays and eagle rays to pygmy seahorses, Pipefish ornate ghost, clown frogfish, nudibranchs and ringed - all at home amongst a spectacular range of colorful sponges, sea squirts, tunicates and coral - the sky an avid macro.
Geologically, Komodo and Rinca are part of Flores, separate from Sumbawa to the west by Sape Strait. In the middle of the Strait, the bottom drops to about 300 meters. The numerous islands and relatively shallow seas between Flores and the coast West Komodo average current very rapid changes in tide, especially when tidal waters higher in the Pacific flows north across the Indian Ocean to the south. The upwelling of deep seas surrounding bring nutrients and plankton to keep the waters of Komodo rich and well fed.
Unlike other parts of Indonesia, the reefs around the southern islands suffered damage relatively some fishing with dynamite. Much of the area is now in protecting the national park. The shallow reefs between Flores and the northern region however, were bombed in the past but are now recovering their former glory. The affected area covers about 15% of the archipelago, and even here, steep drops and current swept points offer excellent diving Komodo.
The island is also famous for its dragon Komodo Dragon, the largest lizards in the world. A predator alert and agile treasure that can reach 2.5 meters in length and 125 kg, they are known locally as 'Ora' about 1100 and now inhabit the island and about half living on the nearby island of Rinca.
