Diving Fins Archives

A Look at Skin Diving

For centuries, people have tried to explore the aquatic environment. Before, their main reason was to gather food or to salvage some items from rivers, lakes and oceans. Also, young girls and boys were trained to free dive to gather shellfish and seaweed, and even sponges from the sea floor.

In modern times, although people still continue to dive for valuable objects and food, diving's popularity grew especially in warm vacation destinations. Tourists and diving enthusiasts skin dive to explore the underwater world. Without any special training and equipment, they were able to observe the beauty of aquatic life.

Basically, skin diving is defined as a water activity wherein swimmers depend on their lung capacity, a diving mask, snorkel, and fins to move about underwater for several minutes. It is an extension of snorkeling, where a person views the underwater environment from the water surface.

Skin diving is termed as such because of the little equipment it requires. Its basic requirements are only a waterproof mask, fins for the feet, and a snorkel. A snorkel is just a tube about 38 cm long with a mouthpiece on one end, used for breathing underwater.

The diving mask should allow the skin divers to see clearly even when underwater. A mask which completely encapsulates the nose and eyes to form an air space between the water and diver's eyes is preferred.

Fins, or also called flippers are like the webbed feet of a duck. These enhance the divers' movements below the water, and helped to propel them in a smooth and efficient motion. All fins have a foot pocket to secure your feet in, and large sheets of flexible plastic.

Snorkels are also helpful in observing shallow marine life. As long one end extends out of the surface, the diver will be able to breathe normally. However, snorkels shouldn't be more than 15 inches long since air can't be drawn to greater depths.

If you want to go deeper into the water, you have to hold your breath. Since you can't possiblily live without breathing for hours, you could only stay beneath the ocean for brief periods, usually about two minutes. Experienced skin divers, however, however are known to stay underwater for several minutes.

The main difference of skin diving from scuba diving is the device used by scuba divers. Scuba stands for "self-contained underwater-breathing apparatus", which is basically just a metal tank filled with air. This tank should be connected to a valve regulator for pressure adjustment so the diver can breathe comfortably even at greater water pressures.

Also, since scuba diving involves exploring the water at greater depths, there are other major considerations. A scuba diver needs a suit to keep him warm enough while underwater.

Scuba divers also make use of buoyancy compensators to help them control their position while underwater. A diver just controls the amount of air in these buoyancy compensators to adjust their overall buoyancy.

Of course, there are several pressure related injuries which a scuba diver is exposed to. Ascending or descending too quickly causing significant rapid changes in the pressure difference between a diver's body and his surroundings may be fatal. That's why, scuba divers need to go through specialized training to be able to stay safe and remain alive even when more than a hundred feet below water.

That's basically the difference between scuba diving and skin diving. When you scuba dive, you are largely dependent on your diving gears for survival. Skin diving on the other hand is a simpler form of exploring the underwater environment, that's probably what makes it very popular. As mentioned, you only need to rely on your own swimming prowess. You won't need to pay for any expensive special breathing equipment.

So if you plan to stay at greater depths for a longer period of time, you can take some scuba diving lessons. Scuba diving is mostly beneficial for those who wish to study and collect date on marine environments.

Skin diving is mostly used for food gathering underwater. In some parts of the Caribbean, it is illegal to catch lobsters using any scuba equipment, thus, those who are good in skin make hundreds of dives each day to collect lobsters.

Question by RomoRex: Where can I get clear diving or snorkeling fins?
I want clear diving fins...snorkeling fins...whichever. Like Jessica Alba wears in Into the Blue. Where can I get them?

Best answer:

Answer by Orsk
Fins come in all shapes and sizes. Various companies make clear fins. Just do a search online and find someone who offers clear ones. Make sure they fit and are the proper type for your needs before buying them. Your local dive shop may be able to order them for you and may even have some of the same type that you can try before ordering.

Diving Equipment and Their Use!

Scuba diving is one of the popular activities preferred by a majority of individuals these days. Almost every person today prefers to learn scuba diving either for fun or for starting a successful career in it. No matter whatever your needs are, you need to develop a clear and proper knowledge of diving equipment in order to become skilled scuba diver.

Scuba diving equipment adapts a person to the underwater world and makes him a part of it. Improper knowledge of equipment can prove dangerous for a person. Some of the major equipment which is used in this activity has been discussed below:

Mask is one of the major equipment used in diving for a better view under water. It comprises of two major parts including a glass plate and a rubber part, also popular under the name of "cuff". The cuff prevents water from entering into the mask by accommodating and adhering to the forms of the face. It is available in a number of models.

]]>

Scuba stands for "Self-contained underwater breathing apparatus." It enables the diver to carry his breathing medium and work underwater with ease without any support from the surface. It is of three types, closed-circuit, open-circuit and semi-closed circuit scuba.

The snorkel is hook-like apparatus which comprises of a plastic tube and a rubber mouthpiece. It is used for breathing when the diver is near the surface.

This is another important piece of equipment which helps the diver in swimming fast and saving energy. As far as the structure of fins is concerned, it is quite similar to the legs of a Frog. These are composed of different kinds of rubber and plastics. Fins are of two main kinds - for beginners and professionals. One that is for beginners is small, soft and more flexible as compared to the latter one. With this type of fin, one can swim easily but with less speed. Other one which is meant for professionals is big, hard and has rigid restrictive gills. Moving with these fins is a bit difficult but fast.

These are some of the major equipment which is required in case of scuba diving. Before you start your diving journey, you should be well aware of all these otherwise you might get caught in a problematic situation. In this regard, you can take help from diving schools which have special courses and programs to spread knowledge of equipment among students.

Diving locker is a reputed diving school of Vancouver which organizes special Diving Courses Vancouver and programs under the supervision of trained instructors to help individuals learn diving easilyto more informatino to visit Scuba Diving Vancouver.

How to Pack for a Scuba Diving Vacation

One area of scuba diving education that seems to get little attention is how to pack your gear. My very first scuba diving vacation was when my wife and I got married in Hawaii and did our honeymoon in Tahiti. I toted a full sized, scuba suitcase from Chicago to Maui to Honolulu to Papeete to Bora Bora to Moorea, then back to Honolulu and finally Chicago. Each leg of the journey, I had to pay extra for the weight (and extra bag) of scuba gear. I carried way too much unneeded stuff. In today's economy, the airlines are looking for any reason to bend you over and nail you in the keester with luggage fees. So planning how you pack, can save you some money in the future.<!--more-->

The Thinking Dive Traveler

Before you start putting anything in a bag, you first have to go over everything and look for items that can be removed. I'm currently packing for a trip to Turks and Caicos. As I was folding up my mesh bag for carrying gear on a boat, I noticed that I still had a bunch of teaching slates in one of the pockets. I removed the backup light from my harness as well as the backup double ender I keep and stainless steel buckle used to hold my canister light in place. Even though I could really use my stainless steel backplate, I'm taking my aluminum plate to reduce the weight of the bag (I'll add a weight belt when I get there). By making these small changes, I was able to shave off 8 pounds from the bag. That may not seem like much, but it will help me get below the "heavy" bag weight limit the airlines impose. Remember, every ounce counts. So get into the mindset to eliminate even the smallest item if it isn't needed. If your bag is even 1 pound over the weight limit, you can bet a paycheck the airline will charge you extra. There's a war raging for your dollar. You need to fight to keep it. Make sure you know the weight limits for the airline you are traveling with prior to packing up your dive gear.

The Rental Option

Even if you own your own gear, you can still opt to rent gear from the dive operator you are diving with. This way you won't have to worry about packing, and maybe losing your dive gear. I'm always skeptical about renting gear in other countries. Who knows how well it has been taken care of. I get the willies just thinking about donning a wet suit that a thousand people may have puked on, peed in or done something worse. So I prefer to take my own gear. Certainly renting gear at your destination is a viable option. Just do your homework into how they service their gear.

Maximizing Bag Space

Looking at how you pack your gear can be a big benefit to you. You are only given a finite space to place your gear in a bag. My shorty wetsuit and mesh gear bag will lay perfectly flat on the bottom of my travel case (when it's laying down). I then put my backplate and wing on top of that. Make sure all of the air is out of your BCD prior to packing. My regulator bag sits nicely inside the harness next to the backplate. I have fin "pockets" on the inside of my travel case. Even my Jet fins will fit in them. My wet suit boots go in the foot pocket of my fins. The lid of my travel case has a padded zipper pocket on the inside of it. My mask fits in there nicely. I carry my bottom timer/depth gauge on my carry-on bag. By packing this way, I have plenty of room for souvenirs to bring home. Just as long as they don't push me over the bag weight limit. In the past, I made mistakes by packing things I thought I needed. For example, I own two regulator bags. One is a very nice, thickly padded XS Scuba one. I love that reg bag. But it is too bulky to travel with. So I have a less bulky one, that isn't as nice, to carry my regulators in. I've also stopped carrying multiple Pelican cases. In the past, I took as many as three Pelican cases to hold "stuff". I'm now down to only one small case, to hold my wallet and sunglasses when I'm in the water.

Make Sound Travel Decisions

If you take frequent scuba vacations, make sure that you think through your gear choices when traveling. It doesn't hurt to have a travel BCD that is smaller and lighter than your home BCD. Same thing with fins. As much as I love my Scubapro Jet fins, my old Dacor Panthers save me 4 extra pounds and I can move through warm water just as efficiently as my Jets. I also have warm water boots that are low cut and a thin rubber sole. Whereas my home wet suit boots are high tops with a thick, hard sole.

Otherwise, if you don't mind paying the extra fees for exceeding your checked bag weight limit, then feel free to keep stimulating the economy. We could use all the help we can get.

Precision Diving

When I am not teaching, I can be found diving year round, in a wide variety of environments that include the Great Lakes, to the warm clear waters of the Caribbean and South Pacific.

I have a passion for diving and strive to be the best possible diver I can be. This passion provides the motivation for me to accomplish between 100 and 150 non-teaching dives per year. This gives me the experience to increase my knowledge pool to share with my students. I believe in continual practice. A great diver makes for a great instructor.

Question by yoji_00: I'm thinking of buying some long-bladed free diving fins, but do those work alright for breaststrokes?
I'm thinking of buying some free diving fins (the kind with the very long and flexible blades) for my wife, but we're concerned that they may not work well when using a breaststroke. I'd like to make sure before I drop $ 100+ on a pair.

Best answer:

Answer by JEN
I'm a competitive swimmer, and I personally would not buy the long fins if using them for breaststroke. When I swim, my coaches have never let us use fins while kicking breaststroke because it causes stress to your knees, and they don't particularly help while swimming breaststroke. There are specific fins that CAN be used when training breaststroke, but they can run expensive. These fins also shouldn't be used for kicking any other stroke. Hope this helps!

Eight Diving Equipment Every Diver Should Have

So you've decided to go on a dive vacation. It's time that you explore the natural blue wonder that's otherwise known as the sea. People who get into scuba diving become addicted to the hobby because the ocean does really offer a different world that is more beautiful than you can ever imagine. As a diver, you can go light and decide to rent out the equipment in the destination itself. But diving aficionados believe that you also need to invest in some tools. This obviously makes for a better option because it's simply more hygienic. Plus, you do get to save money from all the rentals in the long run.

You can rent out the tank and have the resort take care of the boat. Unless you have a lot of money to spare, budget should always be at the top of your list. This isn't to say that skimp on your purchases. Rather, get a trusted brand because these do last longer. And as a diver, make sure you have the following pieces of equipment whenever you go out to dive:

Mask and goggles. These are usually sold in sets and can be packed easily inside your suitcase. For obvious reasons, it is better than you own your very own pair especially if you're particular about things you put in your mouth.
Anti-fog spray. Spit or toothpaste is what divers put on their masks to lessen the fogging. The sprays are much better because the effects last longer.
Underwater camera. If you're a diving enthusiast, you will want to document your every dive. This is also a good way for you to keep track of your dive vacations. Remember, there are wonderful sites everywhere, and if you want to explore each one, you will want to have a memento so you can also see where your best experiences are.
Wet suit. Sometimes, some dive areas don't offer a wide range of wet suits. You will want to make sure that what you wear fits you perfectly.
Aqua shoes. For the same reason, you will want something that fits you perfectly. And it's something you can always use even when you don't go out diving.
Fins. A good pair of fins will fit well over your aqua shoes. Some brands even sell them as a set. Look into your nearest dive stores and see what they have to offer.
Torch. These are great for night dives, and if you're brave enough to venture out even when the sun isn't out, this can be a very good investment as not all destinations have these for each diver.
Gloves. The deeper you go, the colder the water gets. You need to be prepared especially if you're working at becoming not just a certified diver, but a dive master.

The BCD and dive belts may be too much of a hassle to keep. These are the things you can easily get your hands on when you're in your destination. Aside from that, don't go for equipment that may be a little too expensive to maintain. Just get yourself familiar with what you have and you should be fine.

A Review of PADI Online Scuba Diving Courses

We went to the PADI website and it was a very well designed beautiful website. What this company does is offer Professional Scuba Diving Courses. These course start at the beginning level which can be taken online up to the most advanced certifications.

The cost for the PADI Online Open Water Diver Course is 0.00 and is non refundable. This fee covers training and knowledge development and gives you access to the Open Water Diver Manual which is their online course textbook. You can get all the bookwork done online. But before you get officially certified, you will need to go to your local PADI Dive Center or Resort. Once you get there, you will need to pay additional fees and complete the rest if your certification requirements in the ocean.

You will also need to bring a Diving Mask, Snorkel, a good set of Diving Fins and you're also responsible for all of your own Diving Equipment. If you are unsure of what you need to bring with you I'd recommend dropping by your local PADI Dive Center and ask them before you go out and purchase a bunch of equipment for your Dive. They may also want you to go out and get some additional equipment as well, such as a Recreational Dive Planner Table and a Log Book.

Once you register for the eLearning part of the Scuba Diving Course, they give you one year to complete that portion of it from the time you register. So I wouldn't recommend dawdling too long, plus why would you? I'm sure you're anxious to get certified anyway.

Their eLearning system consists of Videos, Audios, Graphical Illustrations and also requires some reading. This learning system also includes a bunch of short quizzes, so make sure you're picking up the material you are reading about. This program is Self Paced, so you can dictate how fast you make it through this program.

The PADI Open Water Diver Course just happens to be the most popular Scuba Diving Course in the world today. In fact, millions have started their Diving Careers by taking this course. Learning to Scuba Dive isn't easy. It takes a culimination of critical thinking concepts such as learning facts and concepts. Additionally it requires motor skills such as coordination and endurance and the application of techniques you learn in the classroom.

The The PADI Open Water Diver Course Online will give you all the knowledge you need to become successful. But the only way to develop the remaining skills necessary for you to make it as a Scuba Diver will be to visit your Local PADI Dive Center and to get live training from a Certified Scuba Instructor over there. The online portion of the course is available in Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, Italian, French and the Netherlands in addition to English.

I personally believe almost anyone can become Scuba Certified if they apply themselves a little bit. It's a great certification to bring with you if you ever want to become a Life Guard as well. And not only is Scuba Diving an excellent hobby, this is a skill that could help you in a Search & Rescue Mission or one that could help you save someones life in the future. We wish you the best of luck in your future Diving Adventures!

Let Brian Garvin and Jeff West teach you more about Scuba Diving Courses and PADI Scuba Diving Courses on our website today.

I am new to freediving and I have been using diving fins and boots that aren't my size (I have size 12 to 12.5 feet (depends on brand) and my fins are medium size I don't know the size but my boots are size 10 and say large on them) so I decided to buy new gear but I don't know what size fins to get so I can also wear diving boots, do I get size 12 or 13?

Best answer:

Answer by uwaterskye
If you want to wear boots and fins, the fins would need to be the footless style with a strap round the heel. They don't have sizes as such. The sized fins fit round your whole foot and you have to be bare-footed to wear them.

Following Are a Few Dos and Don'ts Related to Scuba Diving

Those who have been on a cruise to the Caribbean or Catalina know that it is the perfect place for diving as the water there is so blue and clear. You would definitely want to try scuba diving there, even if you are not into it. In order to sign up for that, though, you have to be in a good physical shape, be an experienced swimmer, and be certified. Only if you are a qualified scuba diver would the cruise diving team let you dive - after all, danger is everywhere, including underwater.

Before you embark on that extreme experience, there are facts you need to know. Following are a few Dos and Don'ts related to scuba diving.

• Scuba Diving Dos:

1) The two most important requirements are the good physical shape and certification. If you lack any of those, do not risk your life.

2) The things you need to take: mask, diving fins, weight belt, regulator and octopus, compass, dive light with backup, dive knife, air tank and backup, dive flag, spare mouthpiece, first aid kit, flare gun (do not forget the flares!).

3) It is safer and more pleasant if you have a diving partner. Do not forget to constantly keep visual contact, and try not to kick out their mouthpiece.

4) A third person is a must. They stay on the boat, have a mobile phone, and help when getting out of the water.

5) If you want to bring back a souvenir, take an underwater camera with you together with underwater light and backup.

• Scuba Diving Don'ts:

1) Do not drink and then dive. Think about your own safety and the safety of your partner.

2) Do not forget to tell someone where you are and when you will go back.

3) Do not eat too much before diving; before diving wait for at least two hours after eating. Otherwise, you might get cramps or troubled breathing.

These are only some of the useful tips related to scuba diving you need to take into consideration. Always inform yourself before diving.

Following are some other topics you mind find interesting:

• The only documentation of the use of inflated goatskins used as breathing devices is carvings depicting Assyrian soldiers crossing rivers with the help of the devices.

• The first to mention an underwater device was Leonardo da Vinci (the 15th c.). He called it Bad Human Nature and did not explain how it works - most probably because it could be used for the sinking of ships, and even for murdering.

• Guy Gilpatrick invented the waterproof goggles in the 1930s, France. Their function was to keep the salt water out of the eyes at the surface.

• The L. A. Co. Dept. of Parks and Recreation, USA, offered the first scuba diving certification course. The wetsuit was introduced to the public in 1956.

Lessons from the Koh Tao Open Water Diving Course: Part 1 ? Equipment

Scuba diving equipment has evolved to become sophisticated, incredibly safe, reliable and high performance. There’s a massive range of options and features available, to allow scuba diving in any environment.

To familiarize you with how a set of scuba diving gear works, we’ll run you through a basic set, and discuss what options and features would be suitable for warm water Koh Tao diving.

How Does Scuba Gear Work: A Typical Koh Tao Diving Setup Scuba Cylinder

Firstly we need somewhere to store the air which we’ll be breathing whilst underwater. Scuba cylinders or tanks) come in a range of sizes and materials. Scuba diving Koh Tao we opt for aluminum cylinders, which are resistant to the corrosive salty ocean conditions, compressing air into 12 litre cylinders at two hundred time normal atmospheric pressure (200 bar). That volume of air allows an average diver to dive for about 45 minutes at normal recreational depths, (factoring in a safety margin).

Regulator – First Stage

This is the bit which attaches to the valve of the scuba cylinder. Since the air inside the cylinder is at two hundred times normal pressure, we need to reduce that pressure down to make it breathable. This is the job of the regulator first stage. Most first stages reduce down the pressure to about ten bar above ambient water pressure (called the intermediate pressure), which is then fed down to the ….

Regulator - Second Stage

This is the bit that you put in your mouth and breathe from. The second stage contains a large diaphragm which the surrounding water pressure pushes on. What that does is adjust the intermediate pressure (delivered from the first stage) to exactly the same pressure as the surrounding water. The result is that when you breathe in, a valve opens and allows air to flow freely. When you stop breathing in or exhale, the valve remains closed allowing you to conserve your air supply.

Regulator - Alternate Air Source

In case your buddy has an equipment problem, you also have a alternate second stage attached to your first stage, which means in the event of an emergency your buddy can also breathe from your cylinder. This is one of the reasons why it’s always a good idea to stick with a buddy when scuba diving.

Buoyancy Control Device - BCD

Obviously we need a way of keeping the cumbersome cylinder attached to us, so the BCD is a robust jacket which allows you to strap the cylinder to your back. The BCD also has a second important function. You can adjust the amount of air inside the jacket so that you hover motionlessly in mid water and control your position underwater. Whilst at the surface you can inflate the BCD to avoid swimming to stay afloat, and save energy.

Wetsuit

Your body looses heat about twenty times faster in water than air, so you’ll need to wear some kind of exposure protection to keep warm. The good news is, Koh Tao diving has very warm water – usually about 30C. That means during the Padi open water course we usually wear a 2.5mm neoprene ‘shorty’ wetsuit , which keeps us comfortable during the dives.

Weights

The bad news is that neoprene is buoyant (as is body fat), so to be able to descend underwater we have to carry some lead weights. The easiest way to do this (adopted by most Koh Tao dive schools) is to attach the lead to a weight belt which you secure around your waist prior to each dive.

Scuba Diving Mask

Your eyes can’t focus in water, so you need to wear a mask to be able to see when diving. If you have a little spare cash and plan to invest in piece of scuba diving gear of your own, make sure you buy a mask. A good diving mask makes all the difference to your Koh Tao diving experience – if you can see properly you’ll have a much better time!

Diving Fins

With all this gear, it becomes a bit tricky getting around underwater. To make life easier we wear large, rigid diving fins which take all the effort out of swimming, allowing us to maintain our air supply and explore the Koh Tao dive sites with ease.
