Kids snorkeling - Discover why it is great to expose your kids to snorkeling

We want our kids to be able to experience many things but above all we want them to be safe when they practice these activities. With proper care and instructions, Snorkeling can be as safe for children as much as it is enjoyable.

Introducing your kids to snorkeling at a young age will undoubtedly bring out their sense of curiosity and adventures within themselves. With an ever changing scenery, your kids will become more alert and aware of their surroundings therefore stimulates their intellectual ability. This in turn will create excitement and will make them more respectful towards nature.

Being a physical active sport, snorkeling will definitely keep your kids in shape and make them become physically stronger. This is definitely a healthier alternative to virtual games if you are trying to keep your kids away from those console games which have got them hooked.

Pattaya Snorkeling Tours - Family Fun around the Coral Islands

Snorkeling Tours in Pattaya don't require any specific training and most people that join the trips can snorkel safely by themselves. Strong swimmer - or not - holidaymakers in Pattaya can escape the crowds for a relaxing day around the Tropical Reefs, taking photographs of fish and cooling off in the refreshing, calm waters of Koh Larn and other nearby Coral Islands. Family fun in Pattaya can be inexpensive and simple and we aim to show you how.

Snorkeling can produce benefits for people of all ages and there are no specific age barriers for this water based leisure sport. Young children gain confidence and comfort while swimming and splashing around in the oceans and the elderly receive tremendous therapeutic gains from a little light exercise around the shallow bays and stimulating scenery. No formal training or lessons are required to snorkel and most people can use the gear very easily after some general tips and advice. It is an ideal sport for families to participate in together which makes it a great pastime for vacationers to seek some budget priced leisurely swimming adventures away from the hustle and bustle of Pattaya.

Typical Snorkeling Equipment consists of;

There are many tour companies in Pattaya offering snorkel trips and other water sport activities, but equally there are many that cram customers into a small speed boat with very little shelter from the strong sunlight and without proper medical and toilet facilities. We suggest that you consider the size and comfort of your chosen sea transport with an emphasis on quality for the overall enjoyment of the experience. Our professional guides can offer tips and help for novice snorkelers and for those who've never breathed through a snorkel tube before we have some useful guidelines from our PADI Snorkeling Instructor.

Always use a mask de fog solution before you enter the water (saliva works too)
Attach the snorkel to the mask strap securely
Swim on the surface and look down and ahead at approx 45 degree angle to avoid the snorkel dangling in the water
Breathe cautiously and if water enters the snorkel try to blast the water clear

Modern snorkeling gear allows you to peer beneath sea level and appreciate the vibrant beauty of the corals and marine life in the shallows near to the shoreline. Coral reefs generally thrive better in warm water with lots of sunshine. The Gulf of Thailand has an average water temperature of thirty degrees and thus has many coral island reefs within an hours' boat trip from the Port and daily snorkel tours are generally available for less than the price of a family meal. Departing around 09.00am and usually returning late afternoon, allows a fun packed day full of fresh air, clear water with unrivalled peace and tranquility.

The nearby islands of Koh Larn and Koh Sak tend to be busier for boat traffic though very popular with tourists being ferried from the marina at Laem Bali Hai. Weather and sea conditions permitting, we prefer to take our guests to the more remote islands of Koh Rin, Koh Pai and their neighbouring pinnacles where the water clarity is almost always better, the corals are more dense and colourful, and there is a distinct lack of jetski's and power boats to contend with.

Sea life in Pattaya and Thailand tends to be mainly hard coral formations such as brain coral, table coral and the stag horn variety. Tropical fishes that inhabit these structures are mainly small reef fish such as damsel fish, sergeant major fish, butterfly fish and surgeon fish. We are also lucky enough to see turtles and dolphins in the area though these tend to be an occasional glimpse rather than regular sightings.

The resort of Pattaya is blessed with a fairly stable weather pattern and snorkeling trips can be enjoyed almost any day of the year. The south west monsoons that arrive around May don't tend to cause too many problems for tour companies with sturdy dive boats and the refreshing sea breeze of the 'winter' months tends to keep them free from rain and high humidity. So, if you're searching for something a little more relaxing than the normal chaos in Pattaya and a lot of Fun - Take a Snorkeling Tour around the Coral Islands.

Investing in quality snorkelling equipment

You will find that having your own snorkelling equipment will come in very handy especially if you are someone who vacations a lot by the seaside. Snorkelling is an activity that does not require any expertise and therefore can be enjoyed by just about anyone.

Unlike Scuba diving or other water sports snorkelling does not require a lot of equipment. If you invest in the basic snorkelling equipment needed you will find that you are quite capable of having a wonderful underwater experience.

For any snorkeler there are a few necessities that need to be purchased. Of course, you could always rent out snorkelling equipment however when it comes to rentals you are not always guaranteed to get the correct size or fit or the best quality equipment. It is always best to have your own snorkelling equipment so that you are ensured that you will have the right size and quality equipment.

If you are keen to purchase you own snorkelling equipment there are three sets of gear that you will need; a snorkelling mask, snorkelling fins and of course a snorkel.

A snorkel is essential for snorkelling and you will find that there are varieties of snorkels from which you can choose. Snorkels vary in design, purpose and price so you should chose one that suits your needs as well as your price range. Whether you chose a basic snorkel or go for a complex one, which has purge valves, make sure you buy a quality product.

Choose a snorkelling mask that fits your face snugly but not one that is uncomfortable or restrictive. The mask should have adjustable straps so that you can loosen or tighten it when needed. Silicone skirtings are used for snorkelling masks these types of masks are not only comfortable to wear but also fit better. A proper fit is very important to avoid water leaking in to the mask and to avoid discomfort while underwater. Always try to buy snorkelling masks from a reputed manufacture. Some stores will even have prescription or custom-made snorkelling masks made on request.

Fins help you move easily through the water and help you swim with ease. Fit is the most important aspect of choosing a pair of fins. They should always fit comfortably and not be too loose fitting or too tight. You can choose from two styles of fins the ‘full foot' fins and the ‘open heel' fins. Depending on your preference and the type of snorkelling, you are planning on doing you can decide which type of fin you prefer. Kids Snorkeling - Choosing the right snorkeling gear for your kids

Snorkeling can be a great activity to share with your kids, however if your kids have the wrong snorkeling gear like a leaky mask or an uncomfortable pair of fins, you could easily ruin their experience and may also put your kids off snorkeling.

Whatever type of snorkeling gear you purchase; be sure it is the correct size and fits comfortably on your child. So it is important that you take your time in choosing your kids snorkeling gear.

So let us now look at the different types of snorkeling gear your kids will be needing for their underwater adventures:

MASK

The mask is your kid's window to the underwater world. This piece of snorkeling gear can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. What ever style is chosen, your priority is to be sure to find one that comfortably fits your kid's face and maintains a good seal.

This can easily be determined through a simple test. To test a snorkeling mask, without using the strap, have your kid hold the mask to their face. Make sure that no stray hairs are under the skirt and have them breath gently through their nose. A good sealed mask should be lightly sucked to their face and stay firmly in place. This will ensure that no water can be leaked in the snorkeling mask.

While checking out the mask, also inspect the skirt of the mask to ensure that it feel comfortable for your kid and check that the mask skirt between the nose and the upper lip does not extend beyond your kids upper lip.

SNORKEL

When it comes to choosing the right snorkel for your kid, look out for, models which models have a purge valve to clear water from the barrel, an ergonomically curved barrel with a flexible mouthpiece. Select a snorkel which is lightweight and has a smaller bored barrel and has got a mouthpiece which is small enough to fit securely in your kid's mouth.

Another feature to look out for is the splash guard. This is attached to the top of the snorkel barrel and prevents water splashed from waves from entering the snorkel.

To test if you selected the right snorkel, place the mouthpiece against your kid's mouth and instruct them to gently bite on it. Determine whether, the mouthpiece fits correctly within your child's mouth.

FINS

When choosing your kids fins, be sure that they are very flexible, not too rigid. The stiffer the fin, the more effort will be required. There is a wide variety of fin styles to choose from. Fins come with long or short blades, wide or narrow blades, but whatever you buy it is best you choose smaller lightweight fins as they will minimize any strain which may be caused on legs, knees, and ankles during your kids fining.

Like every piece of kids snorkeling gear, you will be buying, the most important factor your should consider is your child's comfort. Fins also come in shoe sizes so it is important that you find a pair of fins which correspond to your kid's shoe size.

Always keep your kid informed with the process of choosing their gear. The more they would know about their equipment the more they would likely to learn how to use them better, turning them into little snorkeling pros at a very young age.

Snorkel Gear ? How to Choose the Best Snorkeling Set

I discovered, many years ago that the most relaxing and at the same time exciting water sports is Snorkeling. Just to float around in the water and become part of the underwater world is enough for me to escape the rush and pressure we live in now a days. Don't worry; you don't have to be an Olympic swimmer. As long as you can float and kick your legs, you can snorkel; we'll deal with style later.

Now in order to be able to relax and enjoy snorkeling the right way, we need to learn how to choose the proper snorkeling gear. To make sure that everything fits and works properly so we can enjoy the beauty of the world that awaits us.

There are three essential items you will need. A snorkel mask a snorkel and snorkeling fins. Some folks call it a diving or scuba mask. Yes, you can use a more expensive diving mask used for scuba diving they are the same (just more high priced), but you really don't need to. There are two additional items that I recommend but we will discuss these in the future these are a diving knife and a snorkeling or vest.

So let's talk about the snorkel mask, that's what lets you see under the water. Masks come in different shapes and sizes and the ideal way to check if it fits properly is to hold it against your face and suck in through your nose. When you let go and it continues stuck to your face, you have a perfect fit. The thing is that all masks come in three types, for average faces, for larger faces and for small faces. Most of the masks will come for average faces so when you buy the mask, make sure you get the correct type. Also, the masks skirt, or area that wraps around your face will come in two materials. These are PVC or rubber, for more economical models and of silicone for better models. The last being a bit more expensive, but more comfortable to use and depending on how much you're planning to spend snorkeling and you're budget, both work well.

The snorkel: This item allows you to breath while floating on the surface of the water without having to lift your face out of the water to get a breath of air, like what you have to do when normal swimming. Now, these come in different types also, Dry, Semi-Dry and the regular or purge snorkel. Of course, the dry snorkel says it all, if you submerge, the snorkel will stay dry and when you surface you will not need to empty it out like the purge snorkel. This last one you need to blow out the water that fills the tube while you were under water. With the Dry snorkel you definitely can spend more time under water, since you wouldn't need that extra reserve of air in your lungs to blow the water out. Again, depending on your budget and your interest in snorkeling, that's the one you will buy. But make sure the mouth piece is made of silicone and not PVC, this will avoid irritating your gums and inner lips.

And then there were the fins. Yes, you guessed it; there are various types of fins, actually, too many. But for our purpose, we will discuss two types of snorkeling fins. They are the full foot and the open heel. The advantage of the full foot is that it covers the entire foot and if you were to do some walking on the shore, your feet would be protected. But they don't come in exact shoe sizes and they may fit either lose or too tight, and besides who wants to walk around like a clown with those big shoes they wear. The open heel fin comes with an adjustable strap that you tighten or loosen depending on how you need to properly fit it. Yes your heels will be exposed but probably the fins will fit better and you won't have to worry about them coming off or being too tight that could make you uncomfortable.

So, when you go hunting for the best snorkeling set or snorkeling gear, keep these hints in mind and they will help you choose the Best Snorkeling Set.

Snorkeling Safety Practices - What you should know to make your snorkeling excursions safe

Snorkeling can be one of the most pleasurable and safest ways to enjoy the sea. Although your supply of air is constant and you can keep a look out on your surroundings with proper a proper fitter mask, many things can go wrong however these can easily be avoided by exercising snorkeling safety. At the end of the day, it boils down to common sense.

Several accidents often occur due to a lack of understanding of the environment that the snorkeler or diver may find him/herself in. it is essential that you understand the area that you are snorkeling in and if there are any areas which could be potentially dangerous for you to snorkel in. Avoid areas which have pounding surf and rocky shores. Both ingredients can cause serious injuries to your body. Get to know the tides and underwater currents in the areas you will be snorkeling. By getting to know your environment you will be prepared for possible dangers.

Avoid any sort of contact with unfamiliar aquatic plants and animals. Several sea creatures have got defense mechanisms which can be extremely painful. Protect yourself by maintaining a safe distance from sea creatures.

Lack of swimming skills also plays a major role. One of the most important aspects addressing snorkeling safety, is that you avoid snorkeling on your own, whatever your experience. The last thing that you want to be is on your own if an accident where to fall on you.

Another snorkeling safety issue, is that you understand your limits. How long can you hold your breath underwater? How far out can you go? If there is an underwater cave or tunnel are you willing to risk holding your breath until you surface. These several factors should be taken into consideration. However I have one rule. If you are ever in doubt then do not do it. It is just not worth the risk.

Some times even a strong swimmer can get exhausted. t is important for the snorkeler to have additional reserve of energy to get back safely. Should you ever find yourself in a situation where you are exhausted or must return through strong currents worn out, move onto your back and tread water for a few minutes. In addition you can prepare yourself for such situations by gearing yourself up through the appropriate snorkeling equipment. Consider snorkeling with a inflatable device such as a snorkeling vest. This will make your snorkeling excursions more enjoyable as you will be more able to focus on your surroundings.

Should you frequently dive below the surface, consider leaving several intervals before each dive or make several shorter dives instead of a long dive. Inflatable devices can help in this case to rest and regain your necessary energy between each dive.

Cramps are commonly experiences by snorkelers during their excursions. Should you experience these effects it is important that you position yourself with your head above water and stretch your foot of the affecting area and with both arms reach for the tip of your foot or fins and gently pull towards you. This should relieve you from the cramp affecting your foot

Snorkeling for extensive long periods in cold waters could lead to hypothermia. Consider wearing protective equipment such as a wetsuit to protect you. Besides, a wetsuit is also great to protect you from rashes,scrapes and jellyfish stings.

One final word is that snorkeling safety should be considered as your number one priority before each and every snorkeling event. Remember you are a guest in a natural environment which is full of exotic creatures, so have respect for the ocean and it will reward you tenfold.
