History of a Dive Watch

The earliest were developed for the military and professional needs. The Omega SA probably deserves the honour of having created the world’s first diving watch, with the Omega “Marine,” introduced in 1932.

As supplier to the Royal Italian Navy, Panerai offered underwater diving watches since the 1930s, the early models were not only waterproof at 650 feet, but luminescent as well too

In addition, a large number of “canteen” style were made to military specification during and after WWII. These watches were made in small quantities as they were made solely for military use.

In 1953 Lip-Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms waterproof watch came on the market in France. Various models were issued by Blancpain in small quantities to the military in several countries, including US and French Navy combat diver teams. The fifty fathoms was worn by Jacques Cousteau and his divers during the underwater film “Le monde du silence”.

The Rolex Submariner dive watch was introduced at the Basel Watch Fair in 1954 which coincided with the development of self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, known as scuba. In 1961 Rolex had two versions of the Submariner, one water resistant to 200 meters/660 feet, the other, less expensive version, to 100 meters/330 feet. It was the choice of watch for the character of 007 in the first ten James Bond films, causing the “Sub” to achieve an iconic status.

During the 1960s commercial work in the oceans and seas created the professional diving organisations that needed dive watches designed for conducting safe diving operations at greater depths. This lead to Rolex developing of the first ‘ultra water resistant’ watches like the Rolex Sea-Dweller Submariner 2000 (2000 ft = 610 m) that became available in 1967 and was produced in several variations and the Omega Seamaster Professional 600m/2000ft also know as the “Omega PloProf” that came available in 1970.

Nowaday the vast majority of divers now use electronic, wrist-worn dive computers by manufacturers such as Suunto, Uwatec, Mares, Pelagic and Seiko. are however still commonly used by divers as a back-up instrument for overcoming dive computer malfunctions.

Question by Jack S: What do you do with your Vt3 dive computer if not diving for awhile?
I have the Oceanic Vt3 dive computer and I set it up. However I won't be diving for at least 4 months. So is there anything I have to do to it to preserve the battery or prevent it from exploding or just leave it as it is for the 4 months. I'm sure this was in the manual but I forgot

Best answer:

Answer by scubabob
Since it's a user replaceable battery the only thing I would suggest is removing it after downloading all your data and keeping the computer and sending unit in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight. It's only 4 months..so it's up to you. There's not much battery drain keeping things in memory. I've got a 10 year old B'Air kicking around that's had the same batteries all along and still going strong as my backup.

Proper Use Of Scuba Diving Marine Equipment

Scuba diving is practised for many reasons such as recreation, but it also forms a part of many jobs within the oil and gas exploration sectors. The entire purpose of scuba diving gear is to sustain the diver while he is underwater for a prolonged period of time. Such marine equipment typically involves a canister of compressed atmospheric air (such as Nitrox) and a regulator through which the diver can breathe. The latter serves to convert the ambient tank pressure into atmospheric pressure, thus allowing the individual to reach depths that would otherwise be impossible. Buoyancy compensators can be used when one needs to dive below the accepted recreational standards. Since humans are incapable of breathing underwater, it is essential that scuba diving equipment be used properly in order to avoid potentially deadly occurrences.

Maintain All Marine Equipment:

It's not safe to assume that all equipment needed for a dive is in proper working order without doing a thorough check first. Even if you acquire your gear through a marine equipment rental company, you will need to perform the proper checks yourself. Of primary importance is any device associated with the free flow of air. This includes the rebreather, diving regulator and pillar valve on the cylinder tank. Pressure gauges and dive computers should be tested to ensure that their readings are accurate. Any storage instructions should be strictly followed, for example wetsuits are to be kept out of direct sunlight or they will start to degrade.

]]>

Pay Attention to Marine Equipment Meters:

Marine equipment, such as dive computers, was designed with safety in mind. They serve to furnish the individual with information on the depth attained, the time spent underwater and the remaining air supply. This allows for surfacing without running the risk of decompression, but only if any warnings are heeded. Ascending from a dive is a slow process and one should make allowances for the time needed to do so. Complacency is very risky.

Emergency Marine Equipment Is A Must:

Any experienced scuba diver knows that while there is much joy to be gained from it as a form of recreation, it is also a dangerous pastime. This is especially so for those whose jobs include underwater welding as they are often forced to work at depths that are not suitable for the occasional scuba diver. As such, taking along emergency marine equipment is a necessity rather than a choice. For those going to greater depths, a second cylinder tank, pony bottle and extra air source could be considered as vital supplies. Scuba divers who frequent caves, or dive at night, should arm themselves with at least three light sources.

It is the diver's responsibility to ensure that all marine equipment is in working order before attempting a dive. Not doing so can result in serious consequences. Not only are regular maintenance checks necessary but one must also exercise care when purchasing marine equipment in the first place. While cost is a factor, it is more important that the marine equipment dealer should be reputable and hold themselves to the highest standards of safety. If one is seeking scuba diving gear for recreational purposes, look for a company which is affiliated with industries as they tend to be more stringent.

Question by pizzapie: How do I get the bottom timer back on Hollis DG02 dive computer?
I recently got a Hollis DG02 wrist dive computer, and when I first got it, it would count/show the elapsed bottom time on the display. However, I must have hit something to put it into another display mode. How do I get it to display the bottom timer again when I dive? Thank you in advance, scuba friends. icon smile Proper Use Of Scuba Diving Marine Equipment

Answer by moviebuff
When you were first certified your instructor should have told you that an important part of using a dive computer is to read and understand the manual.

Here is a link to the manual for the DG02: http://hollisgear.com/pdf/manual_DG02_12-4023-r01.pdf

That should tell you everything you need to know about settings & modes and how to change them.

My trip to la jolla with scuba diving equipments

Diving in La Jolla, California a few years ago became quite a treat. I had been asked by a friend of mine who always liked to challenge himself and others. See, I like hot tropical weather. La Jolla is not hot tropical weather. This was not going to be a day of snorkel equipment. My new scuba accessories would come in handy.

67, 68 degrees at best that day, the water wasn’t very tropical at all. That was back in the days when I thought diving at 67 degrees was cold and unfit for diving. I guess I’ve changed my mind since then. I kind of had to change my mind.

Steven had been my friend for years. We go back to the days when we took our diving lessons at the YMCA. It was just something we always shared. We loved diving. We’ve been diving since, but our lives have taken us in different directions and we live in two different parts of the world. Him in California. Me in the Southern most tip of Florida.

]]>

When he got a hold of me to dive with him in La Jolla, I couldn’t turn him down. Steve didn’t really answer me when I asked him how cold the weather was. He just sort of shrugged off my question, "It's warming up quite a bit."

My SCUBA accessories included my new CompuMask from Aeris, which got Steven going. "Does that thing have a GPS and play songs for you while you’re down there?" His laugh was a full bellow that echoed over the water.

"No, but it will tell me the temperature when I get down there." That shut him up real quick. It won’t. But, what does he know?

The Aeris CompuMask HUD Dive Computer Mask can tell you just about everything else. It has an LCD panel that does not hinder your dive whatsoever, but presents critical information to you that you need. Like, your depth, your elapsed dive time, your cylinder pressure and your remaining dive time. It has a USB cable and connection as well as software so that you can create the settings on your computer and then upload them to your mask.

I got a little cold. But, I stayed tough. I hadn’t been in cold water in a long time. I tell you what though, I knew when to go to the surface. Steven was serious when we got back on land. "How did that thing work for you?"

"It worked great! I got to see everything and stay on top of the dive."

"Really, I might have to get me one of those things."

The guy who likes to rough it. It's a wonder to see. Steven is finally going to step up into the new generation of diving.

We bought all scuba accessories we were in need of. Our scuba diving accessories were perfect and were same as we were in need of.

Scuba Equipment Essentials For Specific Diving Conditions

People that just start out scuba diving are intrigued by the idea of going under the water and seeing many amazing things, however they are not aware of how much you need to know about the equipment that must be utilized. Most beginners learn early on that specialized gear for different types of dives is necessary and must be mastered.

This information is limited, however, to recreational diving as this will apply to most people that begin to learn this sport. People that do not have their own equipment typically will lease what they need while on vacation or holiday.

Of course, it is okay to do this, but before you do, it is important that you understand a little bit about the equipment that you're using. It is actually very dangerous to use diving gear that you have never used before or are not familiar with. As you probably have guessed, the more familiar you are with various types of scuba equipment, the safer you will be when using it.

Many divers use various units of equipment, one of which includes a demand regulator which we will discuss here. First of all, there are one or more cylinders that are filled with air that you wear while scuba diving.

]]>

A diving regulator is used with the cylinders receiving the air within them which is stored around 3000 to 4000 PSI. The purpose of the demand regulator is to provide air to the diver at an appropriate pressure level so that they can breathe. Other factors such as the depth or level that the diver is at modify the end result.

Multiple hoses are not used on open circuit configurations instead of one hose. A two-stage regulator design is often used with a single hose regulator so that high-pressure cylinder gas can be taken care of. The demand valve found in the mouthpiece is actually the second stage regulator.

With just a few small adjustments, each person can figure the demand valve to supply the proper amount of air to the diver. High and low pressure devices work together to provide the right levels of air for each of the divers. Whether you are looking at breathing normally through your mouth, or three or diaphragm, each device provides a solution to make life easier.

Well known throughout the scuba diving community is what is called a dive computer. A very important instrument, this actually prevent you from getting the bends or what is commonly called decompression sickness, by allowing you to monitor your speed as you rise toward the surface. The calculations that it performs will give you a safe ascent profile, basically a guideline for rising to the top at a speed that will prevent you from getting sick.

The software actually computes your speed as you ascend, and also warns you as to when you need to do decompression stops along the way. Calculations are even biologically derived by utilizing inert gases in your body to further refine the information you need to reach the surface safely and without harm.

This device has many different mathematical parameters that it uses to calculate a variety of useful results to make your diving experience safe and fun.

Diving is definitely a fun filled event, some of which involves extensive scuba training with equipment. Dry suit diving, and cave diving, have become very popular over the last few decades requiring more special gear to be manufactured.

The military, and the industrial complex have long been interested in these types of scenarios. SCUBA diving will provide you with exciting experiences that will last a lifetime, and you will be able to learn constantly.

Diving Wrist-watch, How to Choose?

Talking constructional discuss about the features of a good diving watch, there are numerous choices of diving watches but not all of them meet the minimum requirements of advanced scuba divers. The question is, we should pay attention at what details while carefully choosing diving wrist-watch?

Despite the fact of none of scuba divers nowaday diving without quartz-crystal computer device. Bringing real diving wrist-watch as a secondary control system will not only instill confidence but it will become a lifesaving gear in case of the primary one is malfunctioned.

So which criteria is needed to be taken into consideration regarding to choose real, functional and reliable diving chronometer? What functions they must have to serve all the needs of diving duties?

Criterias:

The first important factor, comparing to diving computers, they must to be mechanical devices. Today most manufacturers understand clearly that hermetically and firmly sealed body is a must for diving watches. The body must be made of massive high quality steel or pure titanium or should not be multi-pieces. TAG Heuer watches are a good example because of their one body covering.

]]>

Generally, diving watches have circular section thickening ring between their body and cover snap together with screwings. It should have considered side protection to protect from hammering and shock resistances. For such reasons, some manufacturers have moved clock winder from vulnerable place behind digit "3". For example, this construction feature is found on Citizen, Ikepod and Sinn watches. Another useful material is watches made from crystals of antireflective sapphire which can’t be scratch by coral reeves of hulls of sunk ships.

Wrist-watches that have all these features can easily provide water-resistant up to 10 atmospheres i.e. 330 feet. Most professional scuba diving watches can sustain much harder water pressures. With some models of TAG Heuer and Sector watches you can dive up to 3280 feet deep (if you dare)! Sunlight cannot reach such depth, so your diving watches need to have big and bright self-glowing digits so you can easily see the time even in very low light situation. Display should have markers placed with 5-minutes range and must be clearly seen from less than a foot underwater. Same requirements belong to hands and markers.

Diving in ocean depths we need to know not just the daytime but especially how much relative time passed from the start. For this reason, advanced diving wrist-watches should have rotating bezel with engraved dive time markers to limit diving time and safty stops. We advise you to look for a watch model where bezel is rotating only counter-clockwise not unidirectional in case of mistaken rotating, the diving time will only be less, not more, and avoiding possibility of dive overtiming and causing decompression sicknesses.

While purchasing a new or second hand diving watches, they should be tested to be qualified of these standards:
- Dial Readability
- Antimagnetic Behaviour
- Shock Resistance
- Bezel Rotating only counter-clockwise
- Reliability of bracelet, clasp and rim.

The watches should also to be unaffected by salt water and temperature swing difference. With all these conditions the watches must work excellent. Yes, it makes them harder to manufacture but while comparing to human life, it is very worthwhile!

Recommendation:

- Tag Heuer Men’s Silver Aquaracer

- Seiko Men's BLUE MONSTER 200M

- Citizen Watches-Citizen Eco-Drive Aqualand

Purchasing your own Scuba Diving equipment

If you are interested in taking up Scuba diving as a hobby, it is important to invest in your own equipment. Scuba diving can be a risky activity and having your own equipment can reduce the risk of equipment malfunctioning since you will be aware of the quality and condition of your own Scuba Diving gear.

For those of you who are looking to purchase your own Scuba Diving Equipment here are some of the most important pieces of equipment that you can buy.

Since the BCD is a very important piece of Scuba Diving equipment it is important that you have the right fit as well as one which is of the highest quality. The BCD is what you use to control your buoyancy and therefore any malfunction could be extremely risky. If you own a BCD then you are not only guaranteed that it will fit you well but you will also be able to make sure that it is in working order.

]]>

Having your own regulator and alternate is quite beneficial since this is what you will be using to get your air supply. Having your own instead of one that you have rented means that only you will have used it and you do not have to worry about the countless others who might have used the same regulator.

These two are probably the least expensive of the equipment that you will need to take up Scuba Diving. Having your own fins and mask means that you are ensured that they fit you correctly as well as that they are in good condition. Having your own pair on fin and mask is also beneficial if you enjoy snorkelling. Having your own fins and mask means that you can partake in both Scuba Diving and snorkelling.

This is a considerable investment but it is a piece of Scuba Diving Equipment that is very necessary for a diver to be both safe and independent. A dive computer is an essential tool that tells you key information that allows you to dive safely and therefore having your own is quite important. Purchasing your own dive computer will allow you to select one of the highest quality and highest functioning. You will be able to get used all the functions and get familiar with it with each dive.

Whether you decide to buy all the equipment you need for diving or just a selected few pieces it is important that you choose gear which is produced by a reputed manufacturer and is made maintaining the highest quality.

Altitude Diving Tips And Refresher

I did a lecture on Altitude Diving last night and it made me thing about putting a "Tip Sheet" together. Following is a list of tips to remember when Altitude Diving.

1. Any dive between 1000 feet and 10,000 feet is an Altitude Dive

2. There is relatively little test data for altitude diving, flying after diving or driving to altitude after diving.

3. At sea level, the diver is surrounded by one atmosphere of pressure. At 10,000 feet, the pressure is .714 atmospheres (a 30% decrease in pressure). This is the same pressure change as 10 feet of seawater, which we know makes a big difference in our no-decompression limits. As we'll see, this must be accounted for when using the RDP or any other dive table or dive computer.

4. Besides decompression sickness, there are heightened concerns for Hypoxia and Hypothermia when divng at Altitude.

5. Unless the actual depth is converted to a theoretical depth for table use and special procedures are followed, at altitude the pressure ratio can exceed the maximum limit intended by the table or dive computer, increasing the possibility of decompression sickness.

]]>

6. There are several equipment considerations when diving at altitude: (1) Air, trapped inside the cells of a wetsuit, expands at altitude, possibly making you more buoyant. Do a buoyancy check. (2) Different Gauges act differently at altitude, check with your gauge manufacturer and know what kind of gauge you have and how altitude effects it. (3) Computers either automatically adjust for altitude, need to be manually adjusted for altitude or have no adjustment for altitude. Know your computer!

7. When using an RDP or Table to plan your dive, consult the Theoretical Depth Conversion chart first and plan your dive using your theoretical depth, not your actual depth. Adjust your safety stop accordingly.

8. Ascend from depth on an altitude dive at a rate not to exceed 30 feet per minute. Safety stops are mandatory on all dives.

9. Make no more than two dives per day when diving altitude.

10. When arriving at altitude, wait 6 hours for your body to acclimitize or adjust your dive profiles to account for the residual nitrogen in your system as a result of the increase in altitude. When diving above 8000 feet, always wait 6 hours.

11. When using charts and tables, always round conservatively - whether it be up or down.

12. Consult your certification agency or Divers Alert Network for recommendations on altitude or flying after diving. It is generally recommended not to increase your altitude more than 2000 feet for a period of 24 hours after diving.

13. Do not make repetitive dives at different altitudes. Always wait a minimum of 6 hours when diving between altitudes.

14. If you are diving at altitude, seek proper training and get certified. Tip sheets and articles found on the Internet are no substitute for training. Dive within your training limits.

Dive safe!

Is Buoyancy the Single Most Important Scuba Diving Skill?

When starting out scuba diving most trainees struggle with their buoyancy for a while. They are introduced to an alien environment and find that they are either floating or sinking. Unfortunately, many divers with years of scuba diving behind them still have problems with their buoyancy. In the shallow confines of a training pool bad buoyancy can be corrected by the instructor. When deep diving for extended periods of time this is not possible and poor buoyancy could be extremely dangerous.

The physicals laws of buoyancy are described by Archimedes Principle - that most of us encountered at school. It states that a body immersed in a liquid experiences an up-thrust on it that is equal in size to the weight of the liquid that it is displacing. Therefore if a boat displaces water equal in weight to itself then this will be experienced as a force pushing it upwards so that it floats on the surface. Conversely a stone will sink because being denser than water it displaces a volume weighing less than itself. The up-thrust is less than its own weight and it therefore sinks.

The boat is exhibiting positive buoyancy whereas the stone is negatively buoyant. We scuba divers do not want to flop on the surface or sink like a stone. We need to be neutral in the water so that with a lazy kick of our fins we can move up or down. If we floated we would have to paddle hard to duck beneath the surface and if we sank, we would always be struggling to compensate for the tendency to sink.

Neutrally buoyant means less effort and therefore less air consumption. It allows us the best control of our attitude within the water and is more comfortable than always having to swim to keep a position. Scuba diving enthusiasts get to be neutral by balancing their diving equipment. Often this is by trial and error and because a thick insulating wetsuit or dry suit is usually worn it will mean adding lead weights to the scuba gear. Often several kilos of lead are added by way of a weight belt or alternatively in weight pouches in the buoyancy jacket. The time to adjust weighting is at the end of the dive, when most of the air has been drained from the tanks. As the air that has been breathed can weigh a couple of kilos, depending on the size and configuration of tanks being used, the diver is at his or her lightest at the end of the dive and at this point must adjust their weighting to achieve neutral buoyancy. Carrying this out at the start of the dive could result in the diver being very positively buoyant by the end of the dive!

The weight belt and weight pouches can be removed by the diver quickly. The weight belt has a quick release buckle and the pouches are usually attached by Velcro. Thus, in an emergency the diver, or his buddy, can remove the weights and the diver will shoot to the surface where he can be rescued. This is a controversial rescue method, and the deeper and longer the dives being conducted, the more dangerous as an emergency procedure this becomes. A rapid ascent in only a few meters of water by a panicking diver after a twenty minute dive is likely to lead to a safe rescue. A similar buoyant ascent from 40 meters after an hour under water will lead to severe diving illness such as burst lung and decompression sickness. Even if a safe ascent is made, the diving computer used to monitor the dive will probably lock you out from diving for a day or more after a too swift ascent.

For such extended range diving it is often advisable to reduce the emergency jettison weights, to ensure that an emergency ascent is not too swift. Many divers have a combination of pouches and weight belts so that only part has to be removed to achieve slight positive buoyancy. A technical diver may even use integral weights in his twin set that cannot be removed. They know that a rapid ascent would be just as final as drowning. Some will wear a couple of removable kilo weights in small pouches - some do not.

Buoyancy is seen as a critical skill in scuba diving. Without good control, it is impossible to swim over delicate coral without doing damage or hard to hover while carrying out safety stops or decompression procedures. Being over weighted can be dangerous and even worse, wearing ill fitting or badly secured weights can result in unexpected buoyant ascents and the consequential damage this can do to a diver's body.

Mark Jenner is a BSAC Dive Leader and Open Water Instructor. He has been diving for over 20 years and enjoys writing about the sport. You can read more about key diving skills and scuba gear reviews on his diving web site and about important scuba diving decompression subjects such as which dive computer to use on his diving blog site.
