Snorkel Diving Surfing

Since I can't swim...?

I can't go surfing, scuba diving, or snorkeling... so what should I do while I'm in Hawaii? I'll be visiting Kauai and Kona in July.

You can always use life preserver floaty type things that kids use in order to snorkel -- and even if you don't it is possible to stand in shallow water and just look through the snorkel mask (and if you want breathe thru tube too). It is definitely worth it at a good snorkel spot!

Take a dinner cruise, a whale watching cruise, just drive the islands. There certainly is no lack of tourist activity and you don't even need imagination: just pick up one of a trillion 'activity' books from the airport!

Kauai -- go hiking, horseback riding, kayaking (wear a life preserver), walking on the beach is nice and so is playing in the waves on a boogie board as long as there are lifeguards nearby, then there's always shopping, and just plain old sightseeing!

On Big Isle -- visit the volcano, hike the lava tube, tour the gardens in Hilo, tour the mac nut factories, star gaze, and most importantly eat local food!

What's the difference between a wetsuit and a drysuit?

For scuba diving. No silly answers please.

When you go into the water wearing a wet suit, the wet suit allows a thin layer of water between the person’s body and the wet suit. The body then heats the water and this allows the heat to be retained and keeps you warm. There are different thicknesses of wet suits depending on how cold the water is going to be, and how much flexibility you are wanting. They usually range from 2mm to 9mm, and will range from full body suits, two part suits, top and bottoms, to shorties which are short arms and legs for warmer water. The thicker the wet suit, the better it retains the heat, and the harder it is to move. If you are going to be diving in cold water, you will want a thick suit. If you are going to be surfing in relatively cool water, you will want a thinner suit.
A dry suit is just what it says it is. This suit actually keeps you dry underneath the suit while you are in cold water. This is a close fitting double layered suit that keeps a warm layer of air between you and the suit. It has waterproof seals around the neck, wrists, and face. This keeps you very dry and warm.

Are you sure that you downloaded the software properly? Go to the shop where you purchased it and have them walk you through each step and contact http://www.scubapro.com for technical support. You have a nice dive computer and the shop should of shown you how to use it before they sold it to you! You can always ask scuba.com too!

Mesh Bag

Where can I find a mesh bag to cook the vegetables in soups and stews?

This is used when cooking soups or stews, so that only the taste vegetables are cooked in vegetables in the mesh bag can be removed after cooking without actually being in the soup or stew.

It is a gauze and can found in most grocery stores in the hallway of the offer from the kitchen. I just bought mine at Walmart. Actually used the cloth to make a bunch of herbs for soups, can be used for vegetables too, but not see the point. To remove the vegetables after cooking, use a slotted spoon. I'm using my cloth dipped in butter to cover my Thanksgiving turkey. that will remain moist and give it that deep brown all like it.

Two Ladies

What was that movie called - two women are in jail and try to escape?

I'm not sure how old this movie is, I saw about 5 years ago on TV at around 4am. Basically, if I remember correctly, two women are in jail, and I think one of them is there for something he did not. Led Torch

DIY LED torch light with 1 or 2 batteries.?

I am trying to make a super bright LED torch with 1 or 2 batteries to operated one super bright LED. The light with 2 batteries are dim. May I know how to make its intensity higher.
I noted that LED torch available in the market also operated only with 2 batteries and they are really bright. May I know what is the secret to do this? Is there any chip hidden in there or the super bright LED voltage required is lower than the one I have?

There is indeed a power controller chip in high power (1 or 3 watt) LED flashlights. It basically boosts the voltage while regulating the current to get maximum brightness without burning out the LED.
Different LED colours use different junction materials and have different working voltages, but LEDs work on current: you have to control the current within the specifications or the junction will burn out. The easiest way is with a series resistor but this gives quite poor regulation and/or wastes a lot of electrical power heating up the resistor. An active circuit is best - if you have enough voltage a simple current regulator works (the LM117 makes a beaut) if the supply voltage is really low then a voltage converter and regulator circuit is needed.

can i go swimming(in the ocean), snorkeling, scuba diving at 2 or 3 months pregnant?

my husband and i are going to hawaii end of july early august, i just found out i'm prego, so i will be about 2-3 months when we get to hawaii. is it still ok for me to go swimming, scuba diving, and snorkeling?

Sleeve Lycra Top

How do you get concentrated tomato stains out of a lycra blouse?

I happened to drag the floppy sleeve of a lycra top in a dish with cooked tomato sauce (also quite oily) and didn't notice until the next day. I washed it with hand soap (this usually does the trick) and some of it came out. I then soaked it in OxyClean, but the stains are still there, lighter but noticeable. Any ideas? The stain seems to be permanent.

Try Sugar Paste with your carpet being so light this should work the best for you: Sugar Paste, made of sugar and water, and allowed to sit for one hour, will usually remove anything!!

If sugar paste doesn't work try: One cup of Tide with two cups of White Vinegar. Scrub the stain with this solution, rinse with cold water, blot and air dry.

Oiling and inspecting your Evaporative Cooler or Swamp Cooler bearings can save you major headaches and expense. On most Coolers, oiling the bearings is a very simple job. The majority of residential and small commercial models come with a bronze bearing. There are no moving parts to these bearings as there are with ball bearings. Bronze bearings are made with a sleeve of bronze inside a steel die-cast housing. The blower shaft spins inside the bronze sleeve. These bearings allow for a smooth, low friction motion between the two solid surfaces. The bronze portion of the bearing is generally about 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch thick and is porous for continuous lubrication. You will see an oil cup at the top of the bearing. Open the cup and drop about 5 - 10 drops of lightweight machine oil into the oil tube. This should be done at least once a year for light Cooler use, or multiple times a year for heavy use. Even though bronze bearings are relatively inexpensive they are quite durable. Often times, if oiled regularly and the belt tension is maintained correctly, the bearings will last for the lifetime of your Evaporative Cooler.

Inspect The Bearings

It is very important that you inspect the bronze sleeve thickness when you oil the bearings. As I mentioned earlier the sleeve of bronze in the bearing is only about 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch thick. The steel blower shaft is constantly spinning within the bronze sleeve. If the steel shaft eventually wears through the bronze sleeve, then you have steel spinning on steel. Steel spinning on steel will make a loud, high pitched noise somewhat similar to the sound of a loose belt squeal. Once again it is very important that you inspect the thickness of the bronze sleeve. When any part of the bronze sleeve has worn to ½ of it's original thickness the bearing should be changed. If you let the bearing get to the point of steel spinning on steel, you have damaged the blower shaft. Once the shaft has been damaged, you will never be able to use a bronze bearing again. The rough shaft will quickly wear through a new bronze bearing. At this point I would recommend installing a more expensive ball bearing with set screws in the inner race. This will attach the inner race of the bearing to the blower shaft and the shaft damage will not cause any future problems. If the ball bearing ever goes out it will never damage the blower shaft.

Changing Cooler Bearings

Unlike most other types of blower units Evaporative Coolers are constantly producing moist air which creates rust on the blower shaft, pulleys, and bearings. This often makes it more difficult to change the bearings. There are two things that I always recommend when changing Cooler bearings. Use a penetrating solvent on any parts that are rusted together. This often happens on the blower pulley and shaft, as well as the inner race of a ball bearing and shaft. Even after using a penetrating solvent I have sometimes had to use a pulley puller to remove the blower pulley. The other recommendation that is very important, always sand the rust off of the blower shaft before pulling the blower pulley or bearing. If you don't sand all the rust off the shaft, you will not only have problems removing the pulley and bearing, it will also be difficult to slide the new one onto the shaft. You might also be tempted to use a hammer to drive the new bearing into place, which often can damage this bearing. As you can see, a few pieces of sand cloth to sand the rust off of the shaft will make the job much easier and actually save you time in the long run.

How much money does beginner's scuba diving gear usually cost?

I am not looking for "top of the line" stuff. I am just looking for gear that is will work for a beginner.

New or used?
You'll save 50% on used but you ought to ensure everything fits correctly and has been professionally serviced before purchase.
New kit will set you back at least a 1500 bucks, bare minimum:
1/ BC: Anywhere from 300-600 bucks for an entry level. 1200 bucks gets you into the big league.
2/ Mask: 80- 150 bucks. Make sure it fits.
3/ Fins: 90-250 bucks. Add 50 bucks for booties if the fins are open heel.
4/ Snorkel: 40 bucks
5/ Lead weight: About 30-50 bucks depending on how much you need and it's type. More if your BC has proprietary pockets.
6/Exposure protection appropriate to the area you'll dive: This varies considerably from a 3mm shortie all the way up to a compressed neoprene dry suit. 120 bucks to over 3 grand. Yours will be somewhere in between.
7/ A tank: 200 bucks. Two are preferable. This isn't a "mandatory item", but if you dive regularly it's a "convenient item". I disagree with the previous poster on this item though. If you dive semi regularly...most DO own at least one tank. Also, he's incorrect about airlines and tanks. None will take them on board so there is no "100 dollar charge". You could conceivably have one shipped after it's passed security and has had the valve removed but then you're looking at paying for two vizzes (30 bucks each) before the tank is fill able again. In the case of air travel, everyone leaves tanks and weights at home.
8/ The biggie....a reg set: 400 bucks to 1500. It's all going to depend on what you'll be doing with them. No point in buying a reg set that isn't compatible with Nitrox. You may want to go there later. If the set you purchase isn't nitrox compatible...you're spending more money later and going through the hassle of selling off your previous set. Same if you plan on cold water dives. You'll want environmentally sealed ones. All that costs a little extra at first but saves you money later if you buy smart.
9/ A light. 70-1500 bucks
10/ A dive knife or shears. 60 bucks and up.
11/ A dive computer. Very handy. 300 bucks and up. Saw one for 24grand but it was gold plated. That's a bit of a luxury.

Ideally you should be looking for gear that will last you, fits well and fit into where you plan to dive and how far into the sport you intend on going. Planning ahead will definitely save you some serious cash. No need to buy things twice because your original won't hack what you plan to do next. I guess the bottom line is that you get what you pay for and you pay to play. Don't skimp on this stuff. I disagree somewhat about rental gear that someone posted. Some of it like tanks or lead...sure.The rest of it needs to fit you. It's potentially unsafe if it doesn't. That rental reg set may have been dragged through the dirt just prior to you getting it as well. I've seen a pal rent a BC only to have the infator dump come right off the bladder. He lost their lead on that too since he couldn't inflate the BC and had to ditch. Guess who had to pay for the rental lead? He managed to avoid paying for the BC because it was obviously shoddy maintenance but then again..he should have caught that before he left the shop. Don't trust all rental gear is a good mantra.
