Dive Regulator

What would you regard as the best Dive Regulator?

At the moment I am diving with a US Divers Conshelf 14, as it is over 25 years old and owes me nothing, I am on the lookout for an equally good or better regulator. Any suggestions?

What, if anything, has so called "technical diving" contributed to recreational scuba? My automatic response to this question would be the following: Technical diving has contributed nothing to recreational diving, except to raise the amplitude of risk for those in sport diving who wish to pursue additional avenues of training. In the same way that the armed services seductively draw in new recruits through the imagery of high technology and personal challenge, sport divers are enticed to experience the "new frontiers" afforded by technical dive training.

For the most part, those who promote "technical dive training" are legitimate, honest, well meaning people who believe that with the "right" equipment and "right" training you can reduce or immunize yourself against the high risks of extended range diving. For those who might still argue that technical diving carries few if any additional risks, I can only call your attention to this past years epidemic of fatalities directly associated with diving activities beyond the range of conventional sport diving. For the most part these deaths fall into two basic categories. The worst and most dangerous of the lot is "deep air" (high nitrogen partial pressure) and the second and more insidious is gross instructor negligence and incompetence. This nightmare imagery only confirms the basic premises and range limitations upon which recreational scuba is based. For years these proscriptions have contributed to the outstanding safety record of sport diving and the consequent robust growth of this industry. It is not coincidental that PADI has recently reduced the maximum allowable depth for air diving to 100 fsw down from 130 fsw. These actions are a subtle recognition that dive related problems are much harder to resolve under the influence of elevated nitrogen partial pressures. Even small problems can cascade into fatal catastrophes under conditions of extreme diving. The best solution is to anticipate and avoid problems well before they occur. This simple statement applies to all forms of diving, from recreational to extreme technical.

Diving is a fun and popular sport. However, there are some steps every diver should follow to ensure that you are diving safely.

Diving Safety Rules:

Follow proper training

Being comfortable underwater will go a long way to have the dive safely. Adequate training is key to being comfortable underwater. The emergence of training is adequate to get your open water certification. If you go diving in caves, caverns, wrecks, etc., must also have been trained for this type of diving. Do not dive beyond your capabilities.

Never dive alone

Always dive with a friend, no matter where you are. That's the key. When you dive with a buddy, keep an eye on him / her to ensure that everything goes well (and I hope you do the same). If anything, a friend who can make the difference between life and death. Never undermine the rule. They are also a pre-audit of diving equipment with your friend.

Being physically fit

You should not be a triathlete but you should be able to swim and take the stress of diving. A physical examination is a good idea before diving.

Do not hold your breath

Remember to breathe slowly and relax and exhale completely. Do not take a word, breathing hard and not hold your breath. Holding your breath under water may cause lung damage and even worse, in extreme cases.

Slowly and controlled

As your body Combat nitrogen in their tissues and the bloodstream. If you ascend too quickly, the risk of decompression sickness. Always make a safety stop 15 feet at least 3 minutes after immersion. After your safety stop, but they do on the surface either. Up the last 15 feet very too slowly.

Check your equipment

Equipment control is particularly important if you rent. If you have your regulator and have not dived in a while, must be repaired to ensure it works correctly. Perform an inspection of the regulator pipe too.

Relax

Being relaxed and comfortable underwater is the key to a successful dive. If something happens, stop, breathe, think and act. Do not panic and rush to the surface. But observing this safety rule may be the key dive safely.

Immersion diving and its plan

You hear it in your training (or should) and you must follow this advice. Before going under, you and your friend should know the maximum depth is the amount of bottom time you have and the amount air start up with. Check your air supply often. You should also agree on hand signals you will use to communicate underwater.

Hooded Wetsuit
surfing wet suit guidance? please help me choose.?

im stuck between these two wetsuit and i dont know which to get.

Um... i think you havent really narrowed your field of choices very effectively since you have one wetsuit that would be warm enough in seaside washington in the winter, and another that would be cold in marin county CA in the summer.

All my friends from LA surfed 3/2s all year, and some wore 4/3s in the winter. none are down with hoods.

I think the ripcurl with the hood would be way too hot for you in LA. That is sure a good price though! But seriously, you would sweat bullets in the summer, and be uncomfortable all year.

I would recommend that you go into a local surf shop and try on a bunch of the popular suits that are in your price range, get a few favorites, and then search for deals online. The most important factor in wetsuit choice is the least arbitrary: the way it fits your body. The "best wetsuit" on the market could be absolutely wrong for your body type. Maybe the way you move your arms is such that a seam rubs really badly on the O'neil, but not in the Xcel. You never know. You really have to try them on to figure it out. Try to find four or five ones that fit really well, and then search for another great deal.

Yeah, and ask what the guys think in the shop, but you probably want a 3/2. Peace

While most visitors to this large Caribbean island associate Port of Spain as the “tourist attraction” with all it’s revelry surrounding Carnival – truly the islands largest party (called limin’ in trini-speak). But stray off the beaten path and you will find a wealth of natural attractions. We found one such place at the Point-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust – a wetland habitat and peaceful haven where visitors may relax and enjoy bird watching. This unique situation of industry and conservation working side by side can also be utilized as an educational resource for clubs, schools and nature groups. It encompasses over 60 acres and two lakes within a large petrochemical complex – debunking that age old myth that where’s there is oil there can be no natural beauty!

Some species of waterfowl which you may see as you leisurely stroll the grounds (which also has an easy access ramp for the handicapped) are the Wild Muscovy Duck, the Blue-winged Teal, Silver Pintails and Hooded Mergansers. Among wading birds you may spot a Wattled Jacana or a Purple Gallinule sprinting on the large and ample lily pads. We were fortunate enough to see a large Anthinga (snake bird) regally basking in the afternoon sun. This species has recently been found to be nesting at the Trust.

While the sites were impressive, the numerous songbirds serenaded us with their delightful chirps. Frequent visitors to the Trust include the Red-capped Cardinal, the Yellow-hooded Blackbird and the truly golden Saffron Finch – so aptly named.

Not an avid bird watcher? Baffled by these strange names? The trust, thanks to the efforts of president Molly Gaskin and various other sponsors, provides an educational center with local guides to answer questions as well as an illustrated brochure for reference.

Our guide that day explained the conservation and breeding program in place for the Scarlet Ibis – truly a sight to behold. If you’re thinking Pink Flamingos – think again! We were told that these glorious creatures get their beautiful red color naturally from the red crabs that they eat in the wild. The Trust feeds them a combination of foods found in their natural habitat as well as a Carrotene supplement to achieve this look.

After your nature walk you can cool off in the Learning Center that houses information dealing living organisms and their habitats, a unique shell collection and a small comprehensive Ameridian Museum. All this for $8.00 TT (around $1.35 US) per person.

Fellow scuba divers, why do we do it?

I was reading a little booklet tonight called "Dive Like A Pro: 200 Tips & Techniques" from the editors of Scuba Diving magazine. It was very informative, basically reiterating everything I've been taught, and telling me a few items I didn't know.
As I went along reading, especially in the emergency procedures part, it suddenly ocurred to me to wonder, why do we dive? We're going into an environment for which we have not adequately evolved; although 99% of scuba training to me seems to be about prevention of problems, we still have them UW; every dive has potential danger... are we nuts, or what? Why do we dive?

Firstly i have to mention, Whilst I am certified, I'm not the most experienced diver, so I cant speak for everyone,but I think everyone dives for their own reasons, and some of us may not be all that sane but I can tell you why I do. It is like going to another planet, the beauty never fails to surprise and amaze. Every single dive is different and you never know what you'll see. If your want you can interact with amazing wildlife, and some of them want to play with you! As a water baby I find an awesome sense of peace by just being underwater, I cant believe that not everyone feels the same way...And the way you feel more alive just after a dive is worth all the trouble. Yes we do have to ALWAYS have to keep in mind the dangers, there are so many of them, but I think that goes hand in hand with respecting the amazing environment we are about to enter, our bodies are not built to go where it cant get its most fundamental need, air, but a lucky few of us brave it anyway.. Hopefully the dangers keep people who shouldn't be diving out of it..bad buddy experience..

There is no doubt that exercise has a lot of beneficial effect on acne prevention. Some wearable kinds of equipment like helmet or wetsuit can cause acne if not properly used. Some helmets slide about on the head and do not give a good fit on the head. However, this can be avoided by just lining the helmet with soft fabric like a t-shirt. For exercise involving wetsuit, it is advisable that it does not get too tight on any part of the body so as not to create friction that can lead to acne. Friction can also be induced by using gym equipment in an improper manner. Seeing that friction is the major problem in using most of these exercising equipment, then it is better if someone can go for exercise that does not involve some of these equipment.

More so, another important thing to be careful with is moisture. There is virtually no exercise that does not involve sweating and if this is not properly managed after the exercise it can open the door for acne. Any type of exercise you are involved in, may be football, rowing, athletics, tennis etc you need to take care of your body immediately after the exercise possibly by having a little shower. Some people are used to wiping only their head and face after the exercise with a towel but this is not good enough because all other part of their body will still contain sweat which if not properly cleaned can lead to acne. The skin can also get irritated by the towel which is not good for the skin texture.

To prevent acne also require immediate showering after the exercise. In fact there is no point in waiting till all the sweat are dried up before bathing as this can worsen the case. All you need to get is a good cleanser or possibly a medicated soap. One other thing to note is that it is not good to get too hard on your skin by scrubbing, just scrub the skin gently so as to avoid the outbreak of any other infection. In case you are in a place where getting a shower immediately is difficult, then you can get a clean towel and some medicated pads to clean your body immediately.

Finally, it is so clear that exercise has a lot of beneficial effect on the healthiness of the skin. It is therefore advisable to maintain a good exercising habit always, just be careful for some factors that can lead to irritation and possibly acne.
